dpi setting- it confused me

well i was going into my monitor properties and there was dpi setting, dots per inch i thought well if i increase the number of dots the screen would be at higher quality, which was way off. when i set it higher all that it did was basically did the same as turning my resolution down, i don't understand why having a higher dpi value would do this can someone explain?
