Andreas:  I know what you mean.  I actually started with the lamp post idea, but that really looked silly... anyway, they're gone now either way.  And thank you as always!

So um... I told you that I didn't really know what was coming next, right?  I think I may have gotten a little carried away...

Obviously it's in the very early stages.  I really just wanted to make sure the size would be somewhat manageable before I got too far.  It's a touch larger than I intended... a hair over 5 tiles wide when I was shooting for around 4 - 4.5.  To be honest, I'm not even sure what it is yet!  Probably a hotel or and apartement building.  The paler red will actually be balconies.  So, yeah... is anybody interested?

In the completed project or in a room? It looks like it's off to a good start. I'll be able to give a more insightful comment as it develops, but in the meantime, how goes the victorian? Haven't heard about it in a bit. I'll be looking for updates though, whatever they may regard. One last thing, what's this I hear about this first birthday bash?

Sim Shady

oh sweet  ;D  This looks like it could turn out to be very awesome :)  Red brick hotel right?

DFire870

Heh, well, I figured it would be more trouble to do that. And the Stearns building looks great in-game, can't wait for it to be released.

As for the new building, first thing that popped in my mind was that it looked like a hotel (a historical and very nice hotel of course).

I love it, looks great so far but I am really trying to curb my enthusiasm a little bit.
Because, well, I do love all these new projects and all, but of the 14 projects you have featured to date here, only one, the Taft Building, is currently available for download (yes I went through and tallied everything) . Because we are spectators, we take whatever we get and are damn grateful for it! But im trying not to get overly excited here for understandable reasons that I may not see it up for a long time. Not that that's a problem. Its not. But honestly I would prefer to see some of your other buildings up  on the LEX than an entirely new project.

But i also really enjoy your new building alot too.

Strechnitz

hey JB.

I love the way the Stearns has developed into his current form. It will fit in nicely into my cities  Not that that should be your aim, but it is good news for me. ;D

The new facade is very intriging. will you make it a modern building or a SHUR building? I believe a SHUR type of decoration would go very well with this facade. dark brick and perhaps slim rectangular sandstone collums on the balconies. and perhaps a massive Waldorf Astoria-esque entrance in the centre of the hotel.

love to see what you will make of it.  ;)

Matt:  Thanks!  I know it's not much to look at just yet, but it's already on a life of its own!  I've been having trouble getting the textures on the victorian to look right.  All the other apartments are waiting on foundations from someone else anyway... so it would just be waiting in line even if it were finished at this point.  Birthday bash?  That sounds like it could be fun!  What are your plans for that?

Sim Shady:  Thank you!  I'm leaning heavily towards the hotel idea too.  Due to it's size, it would probably make a pretty high stage CS building.

John:  Thanks!  The wait shouldn't be too long.

Fledgeling:  Glad you like it!  While I understand your frustrations (I'm not sure about the number, but it's irrelevant really) hopefully you also understand that some of them are waiting on help from other people and not completely within my control.  I can also say that at least three are very close... within 1-3 weeks depending on the release in question.  I'm aware (and feel somewhat guilty) of my current backlog, and am honestly trying to catch up.  Many things involved in catching up just don't warrant pictures in here is all.

Strech:  Thank you!  It will probably have more of a SHUR look to it.  It just depends on how quickly the details start to stack up.  Given the size of this one, I'll have to be somewhat careful to keep it in check or I'll never get it exported.

Figui:  Thanks!  I think you all are onto something there.

Just catching up on some responses for now... I should go pretend to work for a while!

Heh I know. I know the number means little but I thought it would be good for visualization. I also remember you saying that cycledogg was doing the apartments foundations- and I'll bet that will turn out fantastic. But I have been following different bats for awhile by many different people, and often if a bat drops off the radar for a significant amount of time, I have seen it fall through the crack (but not you, usually). I know you have said many times that they are still on, but heh, its hard to shake that reaction sometimes.

JBSimio

Fledgeling:  Yeah... I know what you mean.  My problem is my attention span is awful once the initial modeling is done.  It's not that I don't like doing the finishing stuff... it's just that I enjoy the modeling part best.  So I have to be in the right mindframe to do the other parts... which is where the delays begin to pile up.

That being said, I was definitely in the right frame of mind today and got a pretty good start on grain elevator.  The model is split into (hopefully) five pieces.  I say hopefully because I don't know for sure yet if I'll be able to get two of them to fit back together seamlessly or not.  Then there are the rail cars and barge pieces, etc etc ad nauseum.  But enough blabber... here's a picture of where I'm at so far:

Don't tell me it looks a little bare either... I haven't gotten that far yet!  :D  Four pieces done (in 7 renders)... one more to go (plus the barges)

I like what I am seeing so far. The only thing I have noticed is that the yellow pipe from the small building doesn't appear to cas a shadow on the silos of the larger building (though that may just be the angle). Who said I had any plans for a birthday bash (coming from the guy with a gift-wrapped box in his sig)? It'll be interesting to see what happens in the coming days (weeks) though. Anyway, good luck with the lotting (in my opinion that almost seems to be a bigger process than the actual BATting if you want it to look good, but then again I'm not that good at it) I'll be curious to see where it ends up.

that red thing is kind of cool

Anyways, the design immediately makes me think of that AmSouth postmodern tower that JosefBrisko was batting a long time ago. Really, with some polished granite sides, modern glass, and a shiny metal roof, this could make awesome suburban midrise, like maybe some sort of nice hotel in an edge city. I'm just drooling over that, because it looks like just some things that for some reason have absolutely no representation in the game, just like those cool apartments you are making

I like old brick buildings but it seems a bit wide to be in a older urban setting(wouldnt fit in a normal block), so I guess thats why the modern idea came about.

Sorry If am being a pushy jerk making all these "suggestions", its just that I keep getting all sorts of ideas and ...I cant help it %BUd%

Unfortunately, this cannot be changed, since props cannot cast shadows on other props (or models in general). With some clever lotting, this could be covered, though (i. e. by putting some small bushes around the silo or something like this).

Matt:  Yep... what Andreas said.  It's one of those little game quirks that really can't be avoided I'm afraid.  In this particular case, the main building will hide that anyway, but there may be a couple other spots to hide later.

Zaphod:  Nothing pushy about it.  The whole purpose of having a thread is to gather ideas and suggestions, after all.  I'm still not sure where this one is headed, so we'll just see how it turns out.

Andreas:  Um... I guess I just wanted to acknowledge your presence!  Hello!   :D

I ran into a bit of a snag with the grain elevator.  I didn't plan my measurements quite right and the canal and rail pieces don't line up as they should right now.  So I have some adjusting to do and fixes to make.  In the meantime... I'm off to the dentist.  (...and there was much rejoicing)  More to come later!

JBSimio

So after mentioning the snag, this morning turned out much better than last night did.  Snag resolved... a re-render here, couple new pieces there, and what do you know?  Sometimes I just get lucky!  Here it is... all the major pieces in place and (mostly) properly fitted.

One more major component to add and (hopefully) one final render for the main building before the true lotting can begin.  I want to take a moment to thank Jestarr and SimGoober for making their models available.  Jestarr made the barge and rail cars special for this... and SimGoober released his canal template once upon a time, which enabled me to make the pieces I have now.  So thanks to both!

M:  Thanks!  I'm glad you like it!

Andreas:  Thank you also!  I knew you liked it a long time ago.   :D

Fledgeling:  Thanks!

Figui:  Thank you!  As of this moment, there are no plans for a version with Cal's... I don't have the parts or the right versions to render for his.  That could still change... but who knows?

So... I got the last part of modeling finished.  I made a family of three large signs (neon or otherwise) to sit on top of the building.  They're totally random, and if you really hate them... they're fairly easy to get rid of in the Lot Editor.  A large silo like this in my hometown had (still does actually) a big neon sign up top with a rabbit that "hopped" across the sign... so I kind of thought I'd try the idea.  I don't really remember what the rabbit had to do with anything, so don't ask me.  Anyway... here they are:

And then here is also a small update on the hotel.  I say small because it doesn't really look like a whole lot, but it took a while to get this far.  The textures (what few there are) aren't really perfected yet either... just for visual right now.

I still haven't come up with a main entry yet... so ignore the gaping hole for now!   ::)
