Can anyone point me to an introduction or tutorial about wall to wall development?  I have always wanted to give it a try, but it seems like a huge undertaking.  Some questions:

1. Are all W2W buildings placed in the same tileset? (Euro?)
2. Do most people who do W2W plop, or is it possible to do natural growth without having it look strange?
3. Are there any W2W starter packs?
4. Are there any specific issues or bugs that plague W2W?
5. Are there any mayor diaries you would particularly recomend for people who want to learn more about W2W?
6. Is it possible to build a W2W town and a standard countryside on the same tile, without the town falling apart while you have the regular buildings enabled for the countryside? (would I have to make the entire town historical?)

Thank you for your help.

From my own experience, I can recommend you to plop W2W's, because having them grow exactly the way you want it is a pain. What I have to warn you about is the fact that the WILL abandon over time if there's not enough demand to support them. Residential ploppable W2W's will abandon anyhow, because due to something related to the game's simulator, ploppable residentials don't work.

hope this helps
RIP Adrian (adroman), you were a great friend

1. Mostly but not necessarily. In doubt check the readme!

2. Plopping is easier while designing the town / quarter. If you want only eyecandy and don't care about the simulator you're done.
HOWEVER:

  • Some plopped buildings are landmarks without jobs, they won't have a direct effect on your RCI
  • You are NOT able to plop residentials (at least not in the long run). Some people say they can under certain circumstances but they are definately the exception from the rule
  • Most non-landmark ploppables are commercials. Be careful especially with $$ / $$$! If you plop more of them than your deamd can handle you'll face serious problems not only with your town but also all towns in your region connected with your town! You can see the result of an inproper plopping by me in that update of my MD - it took me ages to get medium and rich commercials in the positive area! (Note that Co$ still showed demand on the detailed RCI view)

3. No. You may do a search on the STEX for "porkie".

4. Well, the buildings' street front should be on the same line. This can be handled easily in the LE if necessary, though.

5. Too much to tell here ...  :D

6. Of course! Making historically and bulldoze the unwanted is the only way to get a working town in your desired style anyway ... ;)

Well, if you look at the first updates of my MD, you'll see a lot of GROWN W2W buildings...
I was quite successfull at growing these, due to the fact that I had mainly W2W buildings in my Plugins folder.
So... the most effective way would be, to concentrate on W2W buildings.
Nowadays it is hard for me to grow good looking W2W quarters, because my Plugins folder is full of different types of houses...

And (as already said): Make them historical! ;)

Fabian :)

Growing w2w buildings is much easier if you stick to a few sets of them. As you load more and more possible w2w sets into the mix, plopping becomes the preferred method since you'll spend half your time bulldozing lots that don't look right in the hopes that the next one to grow is a good fit.

Ultimately, it really comes down to how much patience you have with the simulator.

Yes, need patience ingame. My industrial/Rs Rss RSSS have 7 century :) . 100percent industrial and 103 Css jobs (fuel station and shops), with the W2W. Very dense town but not skycrapered by CO or Resid (helped by Commercials) that blind any thing on a map (you don"t see street anymore, don't see other buildings anymore, don't see bus stop, don't see people, don't see cars, don't see industries,etc.). And yes, you need to bulldoze and wait.
