Newbie needs help with addons

So, I've been searching the web site for a little while for some basic explanation of how to start using the stuff I can get from the lex. Is there a place that explains that on a really basic level?

I mean, I'm really overwhelmed by all the mega packs, props, textures, etcetera. I don't understand what all these things are, and how they work together. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
