Hi

Long time player of sim city 4 and had the idea of making a scale map of my home region Northern Ireland, only thing being is there a way of getting the information of the web eg like getting a picture of goggle maps and putting it into the sc4mapper, can such a thing be done? I only ask as i dont want to start with a flat region and modify even slope and hill in northern ireland.

Many Thanks Wayne

there's several ways and sources to derive dem data which can be used to create greyscale images to be imported into the game. im short on time so i have to suggest you to hit the search function. i know theres a decent tutorial on this either here or on the simtropolis (dont know it anymore) which I was able to follow easily to create a map on my own.

or, if you feel like it, place a map request either with NHP or dobdriver

... really, it is. I swear.

Thank you for the info, I have been looking into making a grayscale image this evening and might have a try and it myself, the website i found said its a right pain to make an image but wouldn't mind having a blast. If I fail at least i have the option of asking the pro's.

many thanks Wayne

ok I have managed to make a grayscale image which is over 6mb, I have it saved as a TIF image but i cant go anyfurther it seems to be to big for SC4mapper to make its says its not the correct dimensions and needs to be 11329 by 8641, Im thinking its way to big... if i try to correct the dimensions my pc freezes and nothing happens.

All sorted  ;D

Great

Saw your post the other day and was going to suggest downloading an existing map, but time caught up with me before I could dig up the link

they have done the rest of Ireland as well

Thank you for the link, I had seen it but wanted the other side of Belfast (south side) the more country area of Belfast, I live near Dromore, I was thinking that I could have had the whole of Northern Ireland as a scaled map didn't know that i couldn't have the map that large  :'(

I enjoyed making the map or trying to make it to scale, it didn't turn out the way I was expecting it. I had started the motorway on a flat region just to try it out but found that it would take a life time to put in all the small hills, slopes etc. At least I have the experience of making a map from scratch

Many thanks Wayne

I too tried my hand at map-making and its a handy skill to have, I know when I worked out the right water depth to have whales was   ()stsfd()  and its something I can change on a downloaded map so I always have whales in the water

If you are willing to wait, you could always put in a request at dobdrivers request a map topic

I'd highly recommend his maps

I think I was lucky making the map as the Z range thing melted my brain took awhile to get the hang off, I was only able to make the map 40km squared. "The person that made time, made plenty of it", I might just put a request in and see what the master can do, if the whole of Northern Ireland can be done to a scale the map will end up massive!!
