Please go on, I am laughing myself silly about those comments. Not to mention that a diary should be for fun and relaxation. Laughing is the best way to get both.

In all honousty I had thought about 's-Gravenveen being Den Veen ... and realized how silly it would sound. perhaps Den Venen is a slightly better? Another solution would be to let readers of the diary come up with suggestions. I do feel a bit sorry ... not too much though  ... for all the non-Dutch readers who will never be able to pronounce 's-Gravenveen, Scheveningen, IJsselstein, 's-Gravenhage and so on correctly ...

I am however pleasantly surprised about the very nice comments and would like to thank you all for those nice words and the visit to my new diary. At the moment I am working on the next update which should be ready in a few days. I also hope to actually have the simulation run a bit in order to indeed see some vehicles on the streets and roads.

And I love the teaser pics. excelent choice of buildings indeed. I like the name discussion held here. Well I'll stick to the full name for easy reference. Will there be a "Societeit" in 's Gravenveen for Batters and players to convene and have dinner

Hello Serkanner!

I like your pictures very much, your building choice is really excellent
Never have I been i Holland (only crossed it several times going from Poland to UK, but I saw only highways and reststops, not cities )
But I have a friend from this country, one time he gave me some pictures from his hometown (I don't remember exactly wchich one, he lives on Ibiza from many years). Comparing your pictures with these photographs - very similar water color and general canals looking, the only difference are some steps on canal walls, but there are not such pieces in the canal set, and exactly the same quiet atmosphere. Kwakelaar's monastery buildings look great here, their color and texture compose very well with canals.
One more thing I saw on these photographs and don't see here: ducks (but maybe someone will do them in future? )

It is not easy to express how very happy I am to see so many good friends post in the diary. I also didn't expect to have this many responses already at all ...   

One thing I, myself, don't like doing is to reply to every single post made in a MD. That doesn't mean I don't value responses/comments but that a repetition of pleasantries in every update is a bit much for my liking. I do appreciate any and all comments and will respond to the ones that need responding to.

The last two weeks I have worked on many aspects of Heerlijkheid 's-Gravenveen.

• A number of custom growable lots have been made.
• I ran the simulator to get to a point where those lots can grow
• Experimented with diagonal lots ... which is fun!
• Added content to the plugins folder; a never ending story 

For those still wondering:

The 's is actually short for "des" and "des" is an old article in the Dutch language, comparable with German. Dutch language evolved strongly both in grammar and in spelling. One of the things is that we have removed some of the "cases" from the language.

In some city names however it survived in the "official" spelling. Examples are: 's-Gravenhage and 's-Hertogenbosch. The "easy" and modern way to spell these names = Den Haag and Den Bosch

My use of 's-Gravenveen is based on this archaic use of the Dutch language ( and I like it better then the more modern spelling )

Another interesting bit of info might be found Here! and it explains what a fiefdom is.

Why bother?

Well ... this MD is named: Heerlijkheid 's-Gravenveen and Heerlijkheid translates as Fiefdom. I have picked the name on purpose because further down this MD we will find out more about the origins of 's-Gravenveen.

A MD is nothing without pictures and that is why I have made some shots about the work in progress, and this MD is and will be a complete work in progress from begin to end. Simcity4 is a open-ended game and that is also how I play it. Pictures!

Diagonal buildings and lots. Must be a real pain to make, but i like the results. Here I have combined two creators: Krio and Prepo to see how this looks in-game ... I am not displeased about the result besides Prepo's diagonals killing my CS demand 

The second picture shows how I started with building the city center. I have always wanted to try to "replicate" a medieval city its fortifications. This is what I came up with. ( I'll show a zoomed-out picture in the next update )

The third and last one of this second update shows an "experiment" I am working on in combining a number of custom content packs available to us. So far I hadn't used any of these in any previous city yet so I had to try them and fit them into this MD. I think it will work-out well.

Interesting Serkanner, seems you're making some serious work out of this MD. The medieval fortifications (looking more like renaissance)  as turned out very good, only the canons missing now.

I like the way the fortifications are turning out. if you download Pegasus coastal forts you will find a cannon prop in your LE. perhaps that will be of use for you.

Well, maybe it is because I come from Southwest Germany where permanently watered fortifications ware rather rare or non existent resp. destroyed somewhere between Napoleon and the Treaty of Versailles but Marast's wall's don't give me the right "Vauban" - feeling . dunno ... 

Interesting Kanal. But I don't know if these steel catenaries fit to GLR ...

Anyway I am waiting for your next pics (hoping you don't want to become sloppet II ...  )

A short reply to Nardo69:

When starting with working on my city I took the image I had in my mind from how Dutch cities looked like in the 16th and 17th century ( sorry Kwakelaar, you are right the fortifications are more renaissance the medieval indeed ). A large number of the Dutch cities in that time had the type of fortifications I tried to replicate. I had to use the in-game water to get the result I wanted.

Regarding GLR. I have taken the newly installed Randstadrail here in Holland as an example of the use of GLR in a densly populated conglomeration. Randstadrail connects Rotterdam - Zoetermeer - Den Haag  ... and this type of public transport uses catenaries to power the vehicles. That is why I used it too.

Serkanner, great to see these updates. THe fortifications look very nice. And so does the map of Amersfoort. Unfortunately the fortifications are now all gone... and covered with 4-lane roads.. But the medieval towncenter is still fantastic, even after last weeks fire. Hope that 's Gravenveen will have the Amersfoort atmosphere ?

I love your work Serkanner ... each of these pictures has the same and uncluttered ( purified ?) style . Great mastery with all sets used .

Your work with Kwakelaar's monastery BATs is more than inspiring ( a urgent need ... ) .That's beautiful !

My only confusion ,like for some others , is that I can't avoid to think firstly " that would need a litlle more life " , and then ... not so sure .
I don't know if it's voluntary but that's an interesting feeling .

Im real curious how all of this is going to develop, Im very curious how you are going to solve the 'roundness' of many Dutch cities (like Amersfoort). Can't wait to see the Randstadrail ride, or if it's any like the real thing: watch it derail

Yes, this is what I meant: we have a very different background regarding fortification (which is not bad at all).

When I think about a fortifications I think of Vauban - style Fortifications like Neuf Brisach or the 19th century New-Prussian style fortifications like Germersheim (which is in fact a New Bavarian Fortification) and go on chronological until the forts of Verdun (which has been fortified before by Vauban, too) even though places like the Fort Douaumont or the Fort Vaux don't have anything romantic at all for those who have a glimpse what had happened there 91 years ago ...

Unfortunately I never saw the netherland style fortification even though I would like ...

About the catenaries, well the catenaries you used on the GLR are "Big Railway Cateneri". A detail loving railway fan like me does see the difference but on the other hand it does look better than without ...

Hi Serkanner,

It's taken me a while to discover this MD.  I have to say I love the Dutch buildings, canals and general atmosphere.  There are plenty of Dutch BATS about so I am very interested to see how 's-Gravenveen develops.

Of course, I don't understand the Dutch language (you know how lazy us English are with languages!), but can the short name for your city be Den Graaven??  Not sure what it means but I like the sound of it .
