Photoshop Question

Alright, so I've been experimenting with different images and such in Photoshop since I need to relearn it (I last used it extensively in 8th grade, and that was like Photoshop 3.0 or something), and I have a few questions...

I have several images of race cars that have different views (top, left side, right side, front, and back), and I need to apply a gradient to each one. The problem is that each view of the car is on one image, so when I apply a gradient it applies it to the entire layer. How do I separate each view of the car as separate layers so I can apply the gradient? Also, each car has certain elements on it (headlights, windshield, etc.) that can't be covered by the gradient, so how do I avoid those?

Use something like the magic wand or the magnetic lasso to select the cars individually, then apply the gradient to the one selected. For the headlight question, while the car is still selected and before the gradient is applied, hold the alt key and select the areas you don't want the gradient applied to.
