Though I have very little knowledge of grain silos and elevators, this looks pretty good. I like the deep color of the brick. Grundgy though it may be, it gives it a look that is perfect for back in the days when buildings were still made of brick. Regarding the pipes, it may be partly due to the silos themselves: they have a completely flat top with little detail for them (perhaps add a slope or something to it-make it a cone with a very small height). All around, it looks great so far (and will probably only get better form here). Well done.

Very nice indeed! I once tried to make a grain elevator, failed miserably (as usual for me). But I like yours alot! definitely a needed building in sc4..

Looks good JB.

I don't show up here for a couple of days and I miss sooo much.  Your computer just gets up and leaves (I hate when that happens), you get a new one and the building now looks almost done and without my input. LOL
Actually, I don't think I would have had any suggestions.  It looks perfect.
Now that you are on the textures for the building, I do have an opinion there if you don't mind. I love the brick work (my favourite) but the silo and the pipes, not so much.  I agree with threestooges about the cone shaped top, that may help.  But the colours don't seem right.  Can you make the pipe work look more like marcszar's duct work on the Coleman and Son's building?  I think that maybe a wise choice.  Also the silos could be painted white, but still dirty and rusted, (aged) if that's possible.
Anyways, great work and my suggestions are just that.....sugesttions.

Hmmm tend to agree with Rooker on this.....the pipes...most of the elevator pipes I've seen ..the overall impression has been well used and rusty.....aside from that...my datpacker finger is getting itchy ;D
Sometimes I go into my own little world....but it's ok, they know me there.

Strechnitz

haha, don't you worry, I just meant seeing you make an industrial building for the first time. I don't expect a range of buildings. Rest assured on that. $%Grinno$%

I like the dark brick. But does the billboard not stand to low on the wall to be seen by people on the street? With the flat roof in front of it. you need to stand perhaps 200 feet or more away not to have ones view on the billboard hindered by the building in front of it.

Strech.

Thanks, everyone!  I'll have to come back to make proper replies later.  In the meantime, a number of people have asked me about this "camp stuff" I keep talking about.  So I put a little something together for anyone who is interested in what I do and where I live.  If you'd like to check it out, you can see it all here.

Before I catch up on the personal replies, I have two things to say.  First and foremost is a big thank-you to everyone who commented on the camp tour I posted.  I really enjoyed doing it, and was happy to see some of the reactions it brought out.  (It's actually getting a little recognition from the bigwigs here... so this could get even better!)

Second, I feel I should apologize for my recent disappearing act.  The tour took a bit more time then I expected.  Then the weather finally got really nice and I spent a bit of time trying to put my yard back into some sense of order.  After the ice storm we had in January, that was far more work than a yard this size should really call for!  In the process, I got stung by a bee for the first time since I was four!  One of the very few times in my life that I decided to walk around outside barefoot, and I go and step on a bee!  Aren't they supposed to be flying around in the air??  :angrymore:  The good news is that I'm not as allergic to bees as I was 28 years ago... which means I didn't die or need a doctor.  The bad news is that my foot is all swelled up and hurts like a... well, like something that hurts a lot, put it that way.  So there are my excuses... take them or leave them!   :D

Anyway... response time:

Threestooges:  I'm glad you like the textures, thanks!  Regarding the silos, I think it is the pipes and not the silos.  Below all the responses are a couple refernce pictures I've been using.  Have a look and tell me what you think.

Frankie:  Thank-you!

Hydra:  Thanks to you as well!

Robin:  Thanks!  The textures are definitely up for debate at this point, so any feedback is always welcome.  My thoughts were to have the silos be of concrete (poured or preformed, however they make them) and the pipe work painted.  I was worried that plain metal piping would be too much given the amount of pipes.  But, as I said to Threestooges, have a look at the pictures and tell me what you think.

Oldrogue:  Same response as Robin, I guess... lol

Strech:  The bill board definitely needs some adjusting.  The whole elevator shaft may still get reworked actually.

JBSimio:  Oh crap... that's me!  Nevermind...

So, as I mentioned above, I haven't really worked on this at all since the last update.  But here are some shots I was using for reference.  It kind of gives a better idea of which style I'm shooting for.  I know there are many ways I could go with textures and all... but this is what I had in my head when I started making the thing.  Of course, it's not set in stone... so feel free to argue your case for or against!

I should get back in the swing of things in the next day or two, so expect a "real" update then!

Ouch, that's gotta hurt. Well, at least you didn't sit on the bee! (My sister was at a birthday party, and sat on a bee which was on a swing. :D)

Anyways, this new building looks great, and is just another step to making rural areas more realistic.
After a long absence, I'm back! And I will be starting a new MD soon.

threestooges

First, great stuff with the camp update. They should use that for their advertising (on and off the web)... and send a small stipend your way (heh heh). RL issues are never something to apologize for, I myself have been gearing up for my final exams in a week. I have been looking at the silos you've made and their inspiring pics. One thing I noticed was that the supporting structure in the rl shots is more dense (as opposed to the slim thing around yours), another seems to be the relative size of the pipes entering the silos (larger in model-but could be a result of higher needed capacity). One last thing, is that the rl silos have a railing  around their top (giving them something extra on the top) whereas these seem a bit plain. Looking forward to what comes next (both with the bats and the camp).

rooker1

Hope your foot gets better quickly.
The tour was awesome, I want to go camping there. LOL
As for the silos, I'll wait to see what comes next.  I see now why you did the way you did, according to the RL pictures you added.

Wow JB, I can sympathize, I'm also allergic to bees, but haven't been stung by one since I was a teen - about 50 yrs ago! ;D

I'm not going to say anything about the silos - being a city girl ;)

I'll just sit back and watch now....

Dfire:  Good point... I'd much rather hobble around for a few days than not be able to sit down!  Glad you like the grain elevator and welcome to my little thread!

Threestooges:  Stipend?  LMAO... you don't know the camp world very well, do you?  They don't pay for anything if it can be helped!   :D  You're points are all good ones.  The pipes I did make a larger diameter, but mostly just so the details would show up in the game.  I'll explain the rest of what I did in a minute.  Thanks for your feedback!

Robin:  Thank-you!  We have a family camp week (actually two of them) in the summer.  Camp... it's not just for kids anymore...   ;)

Vicky:  Yeah... I think I got more nervous about what my reaction might be than anything else.  I'm just glad I've outgrown the allergy at least a little.  I used to be a city boy myself, so I'm kind of flying by the seat of my pants on this one!

OK... here's the update.  I reworked the piping for the intake building.  I raised everything up higher (which also means that the elevator shaft is now taller) and added a bend in each pipe where it meets the silo.  I added the railings and a ladder.  I also retextured the billboard so it looks more faded and is also higher up on the wall.  The only thing that is out of date on this picture is the texture for those railings and other metal work in that area.  In the "finished" version, those textures will match the other two ladders.

I also started some texturing on the main silos.  The railing on these is the texture I just mentioned, which may give a better comparison (actually the other ones are fixed in this picture too!)  My thought for the walls on the main building is that I will make them some kind of corrugated metal... probably painted some neutral color.  The silos will be concrete (as they are now) and the piping would match the ones on the intake building.  Might be hard to visualize, but does that sound like a halfway decent idea?

Anyway... Jestarr also made some new grain hopper cars.  I didn't even have to bribe him... actually I hadn't even gotten around to asking about them yet.  Maybe he stopped by here and just went to town on his own, I don't know.  Regardless, I really like them and am forever in his debt.  I put them in the next shot for another size check so you can see them too.

That's about it for now!

JB

PS... the Taft Building should be ready before the end of this week.  The Lockwood Apartments will probably be next, but maybe not until I get back from my upcoming trip.

The railings make it look much better, and so too does the fact that the separator (part where it breaks from 1-4) is above the scaffolding instead of inside as it previously appeared. I figured the stipend would be hoping for a bit much, but what the hey, it never hurts to ask (until they ask you to do an addition for it... which wouldn't be bad either, we would hopefully get to see more too). The overall look is really coming together. With the train cars in the pic for scale, it seems that this will be a massive structure. Well done again.

rooker1

Great work, I think it now looks fantastic and have no suggestions.  The railing on top of the silos did it for me.  Everything looks perfect.
