JBSimio: Just out of curiosity, are you planning on releasing that grain elevator without the canal? It's a beautiful model that I believe can go both ways, with or without canals.. &mmm

Pat

@ Glenni if you think that is crap i would most defintely like to see what you call awsome - pat

As I mentioned on the BSC board, the grain elevator has come along nicely. Westlake is looking superb.... not that I would expect anything less from the king of historic North America. Should look nice once the grounds have been landscapped. I wouldn't worry too much about the clearence for the rail. If it'll fit then that's good enough imho. Enjoy California!

Glenni: That's insane! I can't imagine the economics of renovating a grain elevator into residental housing working out. I find it hard to envision a situation where there wasn't more money to be made by knocking the elevator over and starting from scratch.

Zaphod

that grain elevator looks awesome

please tell me your making a version without the canal though. I mean it looks awesome but it could go equally well with just rails, as often in tiny towns the grain elevator is by the old depot is a landmark for miles around
War Kittens !?

BigSlark

I have to agree with Zaphod, I would love to see a canal version and a rail only version.

First PEG's rural stations, then BSC farms, now JB's grain elevator...whats next, 19th century homes? No wait, c.p.'s done that.

If there's a wooden elevator in the future the 19th century/early 20th century farming communities would be very, very believable.

Just my two cents.

Cheers,
Kevin

Wow... so much to talk about!  Here we go...

Citynut:  Thank-you!  That means a lot as I think the first industry I ever downloaded came from you.

Pat:  Thanks!  Imagine what it will look like when I find all the right props...

Sebes:  No... I haven't forgotten.  It just took a while to work up the will to finish the LOD work for the building.  Now that's out of the way, things should move along a bit better again.

Nofunk:  Thank-you my friend!

Glenni:  Wow!  That's pretty cool.  Like Spa, I can't quite grasp that being economically feasible... but I really like it.  I wish developers were more willing to spend their money saving worthy structures instead of knocking them down, but that's a whole different rant that I'm not going to go into.  I think your version is off to a nce start.  Is it something you're still working on?

Frankie:  Thank-you!  Yes, I think I mentioned at the beginning of this project that there will be versions with SG canals, Jeronij's new canals, or no canals at all.

Jose:  Thanks!

Spa:  Thank-you!  I'm still searching for the "right" trees to use on Westlake.  I want to make this one a bit "special" compared to my other schools.

Zaphod:  Thanks!  Yep... no canals will happen.  There might (and I heavily emphasise the word "might" at this point) also be a full seaport version as well.  But that's still up in the air right now.

Kevin:  There probably is a wooden elevator in the future.  I've been sitting on a few pictures of one from the late 1800's that probably tops out around three or four "stories" tall.  It's a pretty simple structure and I'm sure I'll make it for the SmalltownUSA series eventually.

Nothing new to show you today.  I got a little sidetracked by another project that I don't think I'm at liberty to discuss just yet.  (Maybe I am... I'm sure someone will mention it if I'm wrong)  For now, I'll just say it's part of a multi-team effort that plays in quite well with some of what I'm already "known for."  (Don't you just hate it when people do stuff like this?)   ::) :D

I'm hoping to have something to show for myself later tonight.  Depends on how late I stay in this office, I guess!

Six days and counting!!!  &dance

No,unfortunately it isn't, i'm not sure if i even have the model any more. &mmm

but heh, i will probably do it again some time :P

And BTW, this isn't the only one. there's actually two Silos in Oslo converted into lofts, there's also one in Molde converted into fashionable apartments and shops /offices

-      Conversion from silo to student housing cost around US $18m

We have two silos in Copenhagen converted into lofts too:

The white one in the middle, where they have made the lofts inside, and the round one in the back, where they also have add a structure to the outside.
Here is a better picture:

In fact the red house in the front is an old warehouse from the 19th century converted into apartments or offices too.

Realistic, pratical or not, it's is cool and very different.  I wander how much they cost to buy?

I just noticed your conveyor assembly update. It looks great. The academy looks pretty good too. Hope you enjoy your trip to CA (if you are making your way to the LA area, the weather is supposed to be quite nice (70s and sunny). Enjoy your trip (whatever it is for), and I'll look forward to what comes next.

JBSimio

Sorry guys.  This week has not gone anywhere near as planned.  I had more than enough to keep me busy already in the plan... and then a couple employees got sick, so I added a few more things to my list.  Let's just say that I haven't felt like doing much of anything by the time I finally got home these last few days.

I had no idea converting old silos was that common!  Cool pictures, and I thank you both for sharing.

Jose:  Of course I can send you some textures!  PM me with some details of what you need.  Your best bet is to pick a building that I made with the brick you like.  That way I'll know which ones you're after.

Threestooges:  Thanks!  Yes... I'll be in Huntington Beach primarily and probably a couple days in North Hollywood as well.  It's mostly a vacation, but there could be a little business involved... new developments that are kind of up in the air right now.  I'll wave as the plane makes it's landing approach!

Talk to you all when I get back (if I don't get a chance to before I leave yet)...

Strechnitz

Hi JB,

I've missed this thread in my regular posting recently &mmm bád Strech.

In Europe at least it is quite normal to redevelop old warehouses and silos into appartments. In Rotterdam (holland) the harbour activities shifted towards the sea. and the old harbour warehouses(the pretty or monumental ones) were and are being converted into anything from student housing to exclusive lofts with every possible luxury.  The rest is torn down for redevelopment.

Good luck with your work, now that it has become so hectic.

Hope your trip went well. Also, I hope that everything is well with you. It's been a bit quiet around here, so I hope to hear from you soon (and see what you've been up to recently).

Just wondering, is JBS still active or has he gone on to the happy hunting grounds of ex SC4 players. Its been awfully quiet around here recently

Somewhere, JB published a tour of the camp he is an administrator at. I imagine this is the "busy" season for him and he will return to more "full time" BAT'ing in August or September.
