Pat:  Thanks!  A bench?  Well that was so obvious I feel like an idiot now!   &ops

Mauricio:  Thank you!  You're right and I should have been more specific.  Lamp posts will be a more controlled prop.

John:  Thanks!  I think the clock fits alright... if you look back at the picture I started with (page 44, I think) you'll notice some bare space up there as well.

I wanted to pop back in and clarify my thoughts a little better about the prop ideas.  Lamp posts are a given and will be evenly spaced as much as possible.  I can't really include trees in the "random" idea either, because the seasonal trees are made up of more than one prop.  A prop family can only call one prop at a time... and it would look pretty silly if there was only a tree there from April until July and then it disappeared.  :D  So I guess I'm looking for ideas of the more random things you see around campus.  The ones that aren't everywhere, but just scattered around here and there.  Does that make any more sense than my original post?  Probably not... I should really just give up and stop talking.

While we're on the subject of idea gathering, I'll go ahead and throw another one at you.  I'm fast approaching the point where "JB's Modular University" will no longer cut it for a name.  I have a couple ideas that are very name specific... but, alas, I have no name yet.  (Westlake Academy is going to be strictly for the full campus lot.)  So, what I would like to do is gather some ideas for the official university name.  Once I get a decent selection, I'll narrow the selection down and let everyone vote.  The winner will get... um... I don't know what just yet... so it will be a surprise prize.  But there will be something!   ;)  Before you start throwing ideas my way, a couple "ground rules."

  • The name should be somewhat generic so that it applies to as many areas as possible.  -I'm from Michigan and North Carolina... don't suggest Ohio State or Duke unless you want me to stop responding to you entirely!  :D
  • I would prefer a "University of ---" or "--- University" type of format if possible.
  • The abbreviation for the name should be acceptable and non-offensive.  -no Fordham University, etc.  Sure it may be funny, but come on
  • While not required, feel free to include a mascot and/or graphic (school seal, crest, etc.), slogan, whatever else... to match your name.
  • When thinking of names, consider the fact that the name will not just be in the campus itself, but also on everything released for the project.  So it should be somewhat unique and recognizableto avoid potential confusion.  -I will release these with titles much like I do for my other series.  ie.  SHUR - Swan Majestic, or SmalltownUSA - Tiffany's.

I think that covers everything.  Let the brainstorming competition begin!

The Olson Academic center has developed into a true beauty JB

And concerning the name of your modular university... Why ask this when I have a free morning? :D  Here's my entry for the contest ;D LOL

I can't find of an offensive meaning for the abreviation of CU except 'See you' so I think I'm safe here. And the name Clayhurst is actualy inspired by Westlake. really? yes! My first association with Westlake was Westpoint. the American military academy. So I took the name of the British military academy, Sandhurst. and turned sand into clay. Just like point "was perhaps" changed in lake. :)  Perhaps, the explanation dumbs it down a bit, but there it is. My inspiration for this little contest.

I will start  with a couple of drafting posters. To inspire girls and boys in highschools all over Simnation to become a true Clayhurst Wasp!! :D

For the future lady students...

And for the future fratboys.

As you might have guessed, the Mascot for the Clayhurst is a wasp called "stinger" and coincidentily that is also the nickname for the Clayhurst fratboys...don't ask me why.

The University of Clayhurst logo. In my opinion the cartouche with the capital C would be a good looking yet simple logo. very recognisable. (And if it is the winning bid it could easily be transfered on a building as a logo in my humble opinion.)

Here is the old Crest of Clayhurst. It is used asthe sign for the "Clayhurst Alumni Club". Whose members are all poud wasps. And again, just like the Clayhurst logo above you can see the motto of Clayhurst University. 'Ipso Scientia Potestas Est' or 'Knowledge itself is power!'
Quite a fitting motto for an institute of higher learning I thought  ;D

And last but not least, the logo of the Clayhurst Stingers. The rewarded Rugby team of Clayhurst University. as you can also see on the poster above. Naturally their logo is also decorated with their beloved Stinger. ::)

Well, that's it really. Hope that you all like it.

Strech 'stinger' nitz. :P

As for small randoms ..... fire hydrants, bike racks, cheerleaders!

As my other brain cell is out for it's monthly flossing, will have to wait till it gets back for a University name...

Don't tell Strech, but I really like his idea though.

Diggis:  Thanks for the suggestion!

Strech:  Wow!  Talk about raising the bar!  Thank you for what looks like quite a bit of thought and everything else that went into your idea!

Duane:  Thanks!  Bike racks and fire hydrants both sound like good options.

Robin:  Thank you!

Pat:  Thanks for your entry!  I really like that second picture with the rapids.

John:  I'll be looking for your thoughts then!

Dragonshardz:  Well, um... that's OK too!   ;)

RL kind of took a couple pot shots at me the last couple of days.  We've been having some very messy weather with rain turning to ice turning back to rain turning to maybe snow later... ad nauseum... since Sunday evening.  The school groups that were supposed to be coming to camp yesterday officially cancelled their plans as of this morning.  So, I've been kind of running around trying to figure out what's happening... what to do with the food I already have on hand... who still needs to get fed... all that fun stuff.  This is all my rather long-winded way of saying that I don't really have anything new to show at the moment.

I did get the Ahlers Memorial Library and Olson Academic Center rendered last night, but I haven't had a chance to test lot them yet.  I also made a start on the final "Conger Academic Center," but I didn't really like it much.  I often find that starting a brand new building right after finishing a very detailed building gives me troubles.  I tend to think that the new one is too plain of "flat" looking, when half the time it's fine... I just still have all the ornate stuff still lodged in my head.  I think the last one is going to have a dome though... I can tell you that much.  Kind of like the University of Notre Dame in Indiana... although not quite so guady.  (I don't mean that in a bad way... it's a beautiful building... just that I'm not going to make it quite so distinctive)  I figured that will give three central buildings... one with a central tower, one with a clock tower, and one with a dome.  Anyway, we'll see what happens when I get home later.  With any luck, I'll have a preview to show this evening.

Keep the names coming!

I'm probably the only one posting who doesn't know the answer to this one.. but can you stack the 4 seasons of a seasonal tree and then identify the stack of 4 trees as a "prop"? then gather sets of these sets of 4 into a "family"?

No, it doesn't work that way. You stack those four seasonal props onto each other, but they are still four individual props, and behave like that. So if you would put the trees into prop families, the summer oak might "magically" turn into a fall elm and then a winter cottonwood, followed by a blooming chestnut tree. ;)

Hey JB!

Finally got around to making my picture to illustrate the idea i had earlier about the SAM and Ped Malls.

The parking lot is a street with the SAM Beta 1 - Texture Variation 1 - Parking Lots. This would be easier, save menu space, and be easier to find than yet another icon. the Ped Malls are the cobblestone textured ones, but any version could be used really. these would provide access to the school buildings (but the main one would have street access), which could have a slight amount of commercial jobs. The subway stop (realized that after looking through Swamper77's creation threads that if it is a bus stop, it WILL generate bus automata and nothing can be done about that. also there isn't a subway stop in the pic, forgot about that  :-[) would be nothing more than a way for the sims to get onto the pedmalls. according to the NAM readme, there MUST be a mass-transit building adjacent to the pedmalls for the sims to access them.

Does the picture explain it better?

JBSimio

Robin:  Yeah... unfortunately RL always has to come first.   ???  :D

SC4Boy:  Andreas basically answered the question already, but it is something I had tried to figure out myself at one point.  There are some rather unfortunate limits to what can be done with props, I'm afraid.

Andreas:  Thanks for covering that.  Actually, I thought if you tried to put timed props into a family, you would end up with a fall elm that would simply disappear and leave you with nothing when winter came around.  Not that it helps this discussion specifically, but I wonder if you can use the RKT4 exemplars to at least get a "two for one" deal when it comes to prop families...  &Thk/(

Dragonshardz:  OK... I see where you're going now.  Although, it honestly still brings me back to the question of what you're asking me to do then?  If the SAM textures are there... and the Ped Malls are there... then by all means use them.  The whole point of this project is to mix and match whatever works best for each particular person.  Nothing says you have to use the paths and driveways I'm making.  Or am I still missing the point?

I started tinkering with the final building this evening.  I'm not entirely thrilled with it just yet, but here is the first preview:

Right now, it's shaping up to a situation where the dome woule be off-center in one direction.  I suppose that could possibly work, but it sounds pretty strange to me.  So we'll see what happens tomorrow.

In other news... I did get the library and Olson AC on their lots.  Both are 5x4 lots.  They could have fit on 5x3, but that would have left nearly nothing on the front of each one.  Darn oversized porches anyway!  :D

That's about it for this time,
JB

my point is that since the SAM can be used for parking lots and the pedmalls for building access, it's really unneccesary to build driveway and path lots. all i can do though, is try to influence your decision.

Maybe the best bet would to make the driveways and paths optional in an installer... &idea

that's about it.

oldrogue

Like the new center's start jon....the front porch makes it look like a slightly earlier era...will it have been historicly the first building of the campus?   Offset dome don't sound all that good to me either  :(... I like the basic shape of the building tho.....is it going to be bigger than the others?

Stay warm...and we can have a nice pot luck with all the left over food you have &apls....of course you'll have to come and get everyone.... ()stsfd()
