How do you make an object with faces and be able to texture them one-by-one (as opposed to the whole object)?

one word which you wont like= unwrap MAP  ::)  $%Grinno$%

you can also use a multi-material for that purpose ;)

Unwrap UV is a bloody fantastic tool, especially for decalling, BUT it requires some knowledge of paint packages to create the map itself.

However, to apply textures to a face, you must first make sure your object is an editable mesh (if not, right click and select "convert to editable mesh"). Then in the rollout, select the face select tool (solid triangle) and select your face to apply a texture to it.  Sometimes a face will be split into triangles, so you need to select all the faces you want by holding down the control key.  Sorry I can't show a pic but I'm on me Mac
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it

Well, if you are not good creating the maps, you can always adjust the geometry to the map  :P  ;)  :D :D

but for the "non-unwrapers" your tip is very useful and easy to apply
