derwilly, hey!  Your excellent MD is doing a great job of introducing me to a part of the world I know little about.  The attention to real world detail you're showing is reminiscent of great past journals like Edmonton [linkie].  I hope that a month in OSITM here will broaden your readership- it would be well-deserved.

Good luck!

I love your style, is far too hard for me to accomplish. Hope you come back soon.

1 question, is your city functioning or static? It still looks awesome either way.

Congrats derwilly,
This MD really has my attention right now.  I think this might be one of the biggest MDs right now.  Your attention to detail and making SC4 scenes very similiar to real life is outstanding and very, very impressive.
You definately have the chance to widen your following this month and I'm sure you will.
I wait for your next update as I'm sure it will be spectacular.

UPDATE 5 - THE FINANCIAL DISTRICT (PART I): featuring Thamrin road

Hi everyone and welcome to my 5th update!

So many things are happening this summer and if that were not all, my MD is showcased in the OSITM! thanks again to everyone!

I am finally delivering the first of several, yet non-consecutive updates of Jakarta's financial district. As we have seen in the past updates, Jakarta does not have something we could really call "street layout". Thus, the downtown is not concentrated in just a few blocks, for there are no proper blocks in Jakarta. Office towers, malls and condominiums are built along the main thoroughfares, giving an impressive feeling of a skyscraper forest that never ends. And since there's so much to be reviewed, several updates will be necessary.

The financial district of Jakarta is mainly concentrated along the Thamrin and Sudirman roads. This is basically the same road that changes names after crossing the river. The first part is named after Mohammed Husni Thamrin, one of the leaders of the Indonesian independence, which is the one we are focusing now on.

Be ready for a heavy update and enjoy!

Part I - Satellite pictures

5.1 Thamrin road starts at Merdeka Square (remember?) direction south. The most famous landmark is the huge roundabout at Bundaran HI, site of the former Hotel Indonesia, the first ever to be built in modern style in Indonesia. Today it is just known as Plaza Indonesia, home of two well-known upscale malls.

5.2 In this picture you can see Thamrin, Merdeka Square and the exclusive Menteng neighborhood, home to several Indonesian top politicians.

5.3 Google Earth + 3D warehouse view of Thamrin with most of its buildings

Part II - Street views

5.4 view direction south towards Plaza Indonesia. Jakarta is currently experiencing a boom in construction that it's making it even more impressive.

5.5 night view with the usual traffic jam

5.7

5.8

5.9 the McDonald's sign lurking between the towers. This McDonald's 24h outfit is one of the most famous meeting points for Jakarta's teens. It is located in the small department store of Sarinah.

5.10

5.11 This is the central bank of Indonesia's complex. It consists of several buildings, from the old low-rise one, to the twins and several other buildings and gardens behind the towers.

5.12

5.13 Sari Pan Pacific hotel

5.14

Part III - Plaza Indonesia

5.15 Plaza Indonesia at its full extent. The mall on the lower side is the EX mall, communicated with the Plaza Indonesia mall at the Grand Hyatt hotel (beneath the tennis courts and the pool of the hotel). Across the street, the recently opened extension of Plaza Indonesia, Grand Indonesia Mall.

5.16 I could not find a decent aerial shot, so I show the render of the Grand Indonesia complex.

5.17 the Grand Indonesia complex is part of an even larger complex of malls, office buildings and condominiums. The word "construction boom" is not enough to define the transformation of Jakarta

Ok, this is where the first of several doses of skyscrapers ends  ;D

Hope you have enjoyed it. I will try to do my best during this month, but unfortunately, when you work at a company, start up a business at the same time and have a girlfriend... man it is hard to find time for one's hobbies!!  :D

I have no clue what the next update will be. Surprise...

BONUS 1 - FLOODS!

Welcome everybody!

This week I present you the first of several small bonus updates that I will be releasing between the official updates. These bonus updates will help me cover items that wouldn't be worth a full update or that I may leave behind in future weeks.

This time we are going to see one of the saddest and most unbelievable sides of Jakarta: the floods.

Every year during the rainy season, especially towards the end of January and beginning of February there's heavy rainstorms caused by the monsoons. From West to East, the rains start in the island of Sumatra and sweeps the archipelago towards the island of Papua.

In Jakarta floods occur because of the inadequate infrastructures of the city and the garbage in the rivers and canals that block the water. Jakarta, being located in a basin, is surrounded by mountains and elevated terrains; when water flows to the city, the lack of emergency flood canals makes those high levels of water to run through Jakarta and bump into endless obstacles.

Jakarta's chaotic development is determined by well-connected construction and real estate tycoons who openly flout regulations and make huge profits speculating in the construction of shopping malls and housing complexes. Jakarta's construction boom over the past decade has compounded the city's flooding problem by gobbling up natural water catchments, such as lakes and rice paddies, and denuding the surrounding hills of trees.

B1.1

B1.2

B1.3 Massive chaos when streets like Thamrin are flooded. Notice the special fast bus, the TransJakarta, that also gets stuck in the jam

B1.4

B1.5 People just have to resign themselves to wait and wait and wait...

B1.6

B1.7

B1.8

B1.9 Usually the poorer areas in the half north of the city get the worst part, for they are located under the sea level

B1.10 Emergency teams have to start search and rescue operations in boats

B1.11

B1.12 This is the map of the 2007 floods, the year I was living in Jakarta. Those were the worst ones in the decade, with some estimations of up to 60% of the city flooded.

B1.13 Massive jams in the highway

Hope you liked this different, not always pleasant, way to see things in my MD.

More coming soon!
