Great idea to add the new seawalls. They make the waterfront look a lot better than it already did, if possible. Awesome job!

Certainly an improvement!  Seawalls are pretty handy for protecting the urban shoreline.  They also make for a great walking opportunity!

Gives the area a nice, finished look so important in high density urban settings.  Looks great.

just_a_guy

Seawalls sure make everything look a lot nicer in dense cities don't they? And then rl-wise, it's much more safer in case of erosion.

Nice update!

Your downtown looks great!  &apls The seawalls really complement the downtown.

Alex (Driftmaster07): Thanks!

jimbo_jj: Thank you! It seemed like the most logical next step after putting seawalls on the land reclaimed in Update 26. They really do look good, don't they?

Battlecat: Thanks! I hadn't considered the protective aspect of using seawalls; it was good of you to point that out. And, of course, you're absolutely right about effectively adding a long, narrow park all around the built-up area.

djvandrake: I agree, the walls definitely give a polished look to a place. Thank you for stopping by again!

just_a_guy: Yes, they certainly do. Thanks for commenting!

citycapitalizer: Thank you! I agree completely.

Well, it's been a busy couple of days for Lower Columbia. One of my League of Nations allies, Oak Hill, suffered the loss of its president at the hands of a terrorist organization backed by a jealous neighbor country, and then had to fend off a missie attack from that country, known as Isragon. Needless to say, Lower Columbia won't stand to have such reprehensible actions go unpunished. We're now sending part of our military to the area to help Oak Hill bring its enemy to justice, and our other allies of Atrubia, Jiesan, Isporos and Connar have also sent troops. If all this sounds like fun to you, it's not too late to get in on the fun by applying to join the League of Nations. All you have to do is post an application on our forums, and you'll likely become part of the SC4 community's only completely democratic and hierarchy-free CJ union. Give it a shot!

Now then, on to today's special...

Lower Columbia's royal capital, Kendall, recently built a new convention center. It has a built-in hotel and easy access by rail and road to the rest of the city, and it's only a few blocks from the House of Parliament. This convention center is one of the candidates for hosting the League's first-ever summit.

See you all on Thursday!

Feel brand new. Be inspired.

woodb3kmaster,

Things always look so very well designed in Nyhaven and the Kendall Convention Center follows in the excellence. Keep up the great work.

I think I recognize that building. In any case, great choice. It really reflects the success of the region and the nation.

projectadam: Thank you very much! I tried to find a good place for the convention center, and although it's in a mostly residential area, I think its proximity to the train station, Kendall's CBD (just beyond the station) and Parliament does more than enough to make this location a winner. Come back soon, my friend!

Battlecat: Thanks! I'm glad I found it on the STEX.

jimbo_jj: Thank you! You're absolutely right; this building does a great job of reflecting Lower Columbia's prosperity.

GreekMan: Thanks!

Alex (Driftmaster07): Thank you! I look forward to welcoming the Atrubian delegate to our first summit when he/she checks in here.

As the first phase of the rail spur extension edged closer to its opening day, I rushed to finalize all the details for its second phase - building the Downtown Rail Loop:

By September 2398, my department had finally chosen the Locally Preferred Alternative for the loop. Its course would be somewhat irregular due to the locations of other tunnels nearby, but I felt that it would do a good job of fulfilling its purpose - letting suburban commuters take one train from their neighborhood to their job.

Most of the stations for the loop and its connection to the spur already existed when I designed the plans; it was just a matter of adding new platforms to those stations. The Saint Mark's Square subway station was one such station. It was originally just a stop along Saint Mark's Line, with no connections to any other rail lines; the arrival of the loop would change that.

The only new station planned was one near Market and 15th Streets, but you could argue that those new platforms were merely an extension of the existing Nyhaven MetroRail station. However, since the new platforms would be some distance from the old ones, I thought of them as a separate station.

By the summer of 2399, it was go time for this project. We held a groundbreaking ceremony at Nyhaven Central Station, although there would be little work happening near it. It just made sense to hold the ceremony there since that station would be the starting and endling point for the new rail services that would eventually travel along the new tracks.

The first order of business was to start work on the boxes for the new station platforms. Station boxes take at least four years to build, so we had to get started on them right away. It wasn't long before the street near Saint Mark's Square was torn up to begin the process.

The same thing was happening over at Market and 15th. Once the pit where the station box there would be built was deep enough, construction crews started installing the temporary decking so traffic could make use of the full width of Market Street again soon.

Meanwhile, workers were digging pits big enough to lower the tunnel-boring machines into so the biggest part of the work could begin. By March of 2400, it was finally time to lower them into place.

Once the TBMs were in place, things picked up speed a bit. In a few months, the tunnelers were already almost ready to cross Elochoman Slough into downtown.

Tunnelers on the other side of Central Station were also hard at work. At about the same time, they were about to punch through the walls of the new station box under the existing Johanssen Park subway station.

By mid-2402, the loop part of the project was complete. The tunnelers finished cutting across the southern part of downtown and punched into the spur extension tunnels around July.

Speaking of the spur extension, those TBMs to the west of Central Station kept going south while their companions were busy tunneling across downtown. By the start of 2403, they were most of the way to the Kings Line's 25th Street station, where they would cut into another new station box.

In December of that year, after a couple of months of testing, the new tunnels opened to the public. The day after the grand opening, I was pleased to read the Nyhaven Sentinel's report on how opening day went. It was a very satisfying day.

Nice update!  Great use of the construction lots there!

Love the story on the new rail line.  I missed the previous update, but it looks great!  Those seawalls fit well with the city, and the mosiac was outstanding (I don't even want to guess at how much time that took to piece together)!
You're telling me I get to be home for more than 12 months?

Its a he. ;) The president is Abijad Aljakar. Also I love the vast subways!

Adrian, I miss you man.

I wonder how I missed the update before this one... I looked at this every day. Oh well  :D
Nice work. I like the shot of the railways.. where the tunnel-boring machines get lowered. Makes me wonder.. do you use that mod for ''caterganies'' (or what ever it's spelled  ()what() )?

cheers!

djvandrake

Awesome!  Great way to make the construction of it all seem real.  12,000 is pretty good ridership too

You're central station looks great.  &apls

Battlecat: Thank you! Those lots wouldn't have been nearly as realistic if I weren't an avid follower of local light rail and subway construction projects.

meinhosen: Thanks! I'm glad you like the seawalls, too. That mosaic wasn't too hard to put together, but as with any mosaic, it certainly required a lot of concentration.

Alex (Driftmaster07): Thanks for letting me know! I'm sure President Aljakar is enjoying himself in Kendall, now that the summit has begun.

Glowbal: Thank you! I do, in fact, use a catenary mod (although since I'm away from my SC4 computer today, I can't check and see which one).

djvandrake: Thanks a lot! My research into local rail projects (as I mentioned to Battlecat) really came in handy with this update.

peter007: Thanks you very much!

rikkeflik: Welcome to Nyhaven, and thanks for reading everything! I'm glad you liked all of the updates.

Well, today marks the end of my time in OSITM, but it was a great month! I'm glad to have been awarded this honor, and I hope you all have enjoyed it as much as I have. There will still be frequent updates until late September, when I go back to school, but you'll have to look for me back in the Best Sellers section.

Now then, on with today's specials!

Work continues on the new city of Astoria. The first part of it to be built, though, was this airport. When building it, I was inspired by features of both Phoenix's and Denver's airports. The idea for having the main terminal entrances in the middle of the main roadway came from Phoenix, while the satellite concourses were inspired by Denver.

Of course, it wouldn't be a complete airport without general aviation and cargo facilities. The cargo terminal, in fact, is what I built first; it grew out of a porject I was working on for one of my League of Nagtions allies.

Here's a closer view of the cargo area.

See you again on Thursday!
