Gmax - Too old for it's own good?

Ok, this has been making want to rip my hair. I decide to go ahead and try BATting, but noooooo.

This was what I got with Direct3D. It was pretty much the same for the OpenGL option, except all the 3D views were white.


This is what happened when I selected HEIDI. Now I am locked out of gmax. 


How do I climb out of this hole?

I have an Nvidia 8800GTX and yes, I'm using Vista.

I used to have that problem myself with Vista, and going to Properties/Compatibility  for the BAT Shortcut, and ticking the last three settings, along with selecting Compatibility Mode "XP SP 2", seemed to fix it for me.

haha indeed! When I bought my new computer I bought it from a small local firm and deliberately turned down vista in favour of xp. Most everything will still be xp compatible for the next few years and by then I'll be in the market for a new computer anyway.

Have you checked that your DirectX installation is working properly?  See if you can locate DXDIAG and run it to see if it throws any errors up.

If there weren't so many problems with Vista, it wouldn't get bashed, would it?

I think you have to edit the GMAX.cfg to fix that. But i'm not sure if that file contains the settings. Pretty funky glitch with DirectX.

I don't have DirectX selected. I have HEIDI selected. HEIDI is what caused the meltdown.

So the obvious thing then is to not use HEIDI but try and get DirectX working properly, isn't it?  Uninstall GMAX totally, including deleting the folder after uninstall.  Locate and run DXDiag (normally located in the Windows\system32 folder with XP but who knows where in Vista) and make sure DirectX is working before reinstalling GMAX.

I knew that, I already got gmax reinstalled with DirectX selected, I just need to set up the compatibility options. And once again it's not DirectX - DirectX is working perfectly for everything else on the computer.

Which version of DirectX are you using?  Typically, screwed up displays in a 3D app that work for everyone else can normally be attributed to your system and not the app itself.   Also you never mentioned which graphics card you're using.  If you don't provide sufficient information, how can we know (apart from using the Force) what your setup is.

I imagine I'm using DX10. I do have the files for DX9.0c installed as well.

DirectX 10 and 9?  What does DXDiag report?

Right click on your Gmax icon and set to sp2, I have Vista on one of my computers and I hate it, but this seems to fix the problems half of the time. Hope this helps.
