Thank You for dropping in Carl, your comments are always welcomed. I can really see that you indeed enjoy the story and the pictures. ;)

Well, as promissed, here is the small update before we go back visiting another region. I still need some suggestion where to go to. Sofar someone mentioned the Chadelaine Island up north and another one Lakefield. So, what do you want to visit the next time? Last chance.

Update 83

"Waterfalls, a Little Paradise?"

Again, That Same Day...........Saturday, June 17th, 1967

First let's have a look at the two road constuction contract that Gabber Inc signed lately. First there is the road to the coast, to Wimmerbay to be precise. On the partial Simland Map we can see the entire road project, starting on highway 35 at the Ganoga Outlet and ending at the ferry point of Wimmerbay. The road will take no more than two years to build and will make a shorter connection between Access and Radley, a small harbour town on the Atlantic coast. Since Highway 35 is connected to Highway 15 already, the one that leads east to Lakefield and Roy, the connection to the coast will be a lot shorter for those two bigger cities also, probably helping out other neglected regions to get more developped in the future.

83.01

With some more details, here are both projects in the Winding River Region. The Wimmerbay Road (in yellow) will start directly on highway 35, just after the Big Ganoga Island. It will follow the banks of the Ganoga Lake for awhile and then turn sharply to the east crossing the Venus Wetlands and then the Lowbanks River. From there it will go directly to the borders of the Dark Forest,(the one that is forbidden for airtraffic because of mysterious magnetic fields that disturb greatly the electric and electronic devices on the planes), make another sharp turn, go up the hills and leave the Winding River Region at the Gibson Lake.
It will be a simple asphalted two-lane road. The cost is some 16 Million ยงยง's and as said before, it will be ready by the end of 1969 before the new decade of the seventies.

Then, the second contract signed only a few days back is the "Oilroad" as they have named it already. (here shown in lightblueish green)
That is a much shorter road, but will take a full two years to be build because of the immense wet forests that make it difficult to advance quickly. A lot of gravel will be needed for this and Mr Sterling (the Millionaire that owns most of the Stoke Mountains just west of the oilfields), has offered to supply a gravelpit that would just be ideal for the gravel needed and isn't too far form the oilfield's roads. This is shown in blue below.
Our bushpilot Steve Gibson has been busy in the last years to fly researchers, geologists and other scientist to this area and we remember that oil , coal and copper was found in this area. With the latest announcement of the gouvernment we found out that soon the oilfields will become a reality and supply the area with a lot of jobs and excellent incomes. A coal industry will come later to this area. Plans are already in the developping.

Now, let's go back on the westside of the big river, up the hills and towards the newly discovered small village of Holland. We went there a couple of updates ago, just to have a quick look around. Today we visit the place more intensively.
The village is small, most likely the smallest in the region. Holland was founded in 1959, when the first sheepfarmers arrived. The population is less than 250 today in 1967 and only until a few weeks back, this village had a well kept secret, the beautiful and untouched waterfalls nearby. The Holland Falls, as they call it, are on a private property of a farm that is situated at the beginning of the village. On the picture it is the one with the two ponds near the barns. The Greel family owns most lands around the village, including the falls and a good part of the mountain. They raise sheep and not in small quantities it seems.

83.04

In the Center of the village stands its pride, the church of Holland, built only a few years back with the financial help of the Lakefield Cathedral. There used to be a little pond here where ducks came feeding every day. The town hasn't grown much since it was founded, actually it has stayed the same for the last 5 years simply because it is far from everything and on a badly shaped and maintained sandy road. Even Dairyfarmers did not settle here, although the fields are quite fertile around the area.

83.05

Roads are quiet in the village and it seems that only on sundays mornings there is some activity, when the churchbells call for their children. There is no school, but kids are driven to Phlox every morning, which take a good 75 minutes to reach with normal weather conditions

83.06

To get to the falls, you need to take the road beside the church and the colourful tent of the "Young Explorer's Club" , go down all the way until the road melts into a field. From there you can see the falls and most of all, hear them as they loudly splash into the big pond.
On sundays, when the weather is warm in the summer, one can see a few cars and campers here that the farmer allows in exchange for a small token to use his land. Surprisingly it is people from far away, such as citizens from Milts, Gasen Mills and Roy. It was kept secret by those who knew it for the reason to enjoy it only for themselves, but lately a small group of mountain climbers have come upon this spot while looking for a quick way to climb Mount Totem, which is just behind the falls and where the water comes from.

83.07

Just a few hundred yards downstream the little creek, lives a fellow in a camper since 4 years, he is the guardian that takes care of the area for the farmer and watches that the visitors do not leave anything behind that could hurt the surroundings.

83.08

The pond below the falls is clear, so clear that some folks even drink from it. Filled with mountaintrouts, it seems to have attracked some sportanglers, which try to catch the one of their lifetime trophies in these rapids below the falls.

83.09

Here's a full view of the village, the mountain and the falls. The Pearson Brook, as it is called, comes down from the western side of Mount Totem and is the result of the melting ice and snow up there. As it comes down on the midway it formed a pool, known in the village as the Devil's Hole, as it has strangely taken the lives of three young kids in 1959. Then the creek divides into two, one with waterfalls and the other with simple rapids. Both branches end up flowing into the Big Pond, from where the creek slowly continues to run downhill and adds to the Dorden River that enters the Winding River just on the corner of Slye's sawmill in Phlox.

83.10

Known as the Devil's hole, the first bassin of the icy creek warms up its water here. The wilderness that surrounds the pond is absolutely untouched and also very much unknown. It was very difficult for the rescue team to reach this site to recover the three bodies of those kids that drowned here in the late fifties. Still today, only a handful of people have seen this spot and not many adventure themselves to the area.

83.11

Here's a picture of the creek coming in from the heights to later form the first pond.

83.12

This picture below is in between the first and the second falls, where sometimes fishermen throw in their line, just above the falls. This little pond, simply called the second Pond by the villagers, has a very deep spot just below its first falls, which many say that it contains very big and old trouts of the size that are not imaginable. Well, strange though that no one ever caught one single trout in this spot and for others it seems that it is impossible for the fish come this far upstream. But still, some anglers will make the 45 minute climb up here only to come and plunge their fishing rod.

83.13

And here is a final look at the area of the waterfalls. Still somewhat unknown to the population, Holland is unfortunetly about to change it's face, unless..........but I think it is too late for that.

83.14

That's it for the "small", and finally not so small update. The next time we will visit another region again. Sofar you voted 1 for Chadelaine Island and 1 for Lakefield, the Capitol City. Let's hear some more votes please. Thanks.

Wow, that's a long time. One of the many reasons I chose a desert environment, not much in terms of flora and, well, not much people have a desert MD. Atrubia, from what I have seen, is probably one of the longest running out there. Although I have switched to green, I'm going back to sand ASAP. Can't wait for the next update and keep up the good work man!

Alex

My new MD. Check it out if you wish.

Adrian, I miss you man.

Fishers near tremendous waterfall ... Excellent

That last line there reminded me a bit of The Lorax. Slye's mill isn't moving up there, is it? Also, when will we be getting the next word on the military base? Inquiring minds want to know, and all that.

I once started playing with a desertmod, but soon realized that it didn't come out well, probably because I do not live near a desert at all and my knowledge for it is somehow limited. Btw, a desert can be beautiful, I once saw it in Australia, it was all flowering. Wow!

Silur, glad you like the anglers.... ;)

No Slye's sawmill will stay where it is since it is about to have direct access to a privately owned railroad. About the army,.....hm, some folks said last week that they saw strange lights around the base very late at night and a new rumour tells us that the army has taken more land around the base into possession. They even relocated some farmers, which probably had very high costs.
Thanks for commenting ;) and have a nice weekend.

Fred that is a lovely area there. So well detailed and laid out. Makes me want to take a refreshing dip  ()stsfd() The pond and falls look beautiful.

Great update, enjoyed it.

Fred,

thank you for this great story so far. I finally made my way all through it till Page 74. It's still one of my favourite bedtime lectures :)

I'm curious what will happen next!

aaahhhh... I needed that.  :satisfied:
RL has kept me out of the loop for a bit, what a pleasure to have 3 updates to peruse and enjoy.  ;D

Sorry to learn RL has been kicking back, (selfishly) I'm happy to see it hasn't taken away your knack for detailing the game or affected your story telling.  &apls

It was good to catch up on the goings on in and around Winding River; sounds like there's no stopping 'progress'. Maybe it's time to start a commune on Chadelaine Island?  ::) I'd gladly give up the smell of burnt diesel for the opportunity to "Turn On, Tune In and Drop Out!"  $%Grinno$%

Cheers!

Thanks for all those comments, I was starting to wonder where you all went to. ;)
Sorry, I am totally occupied irl at the moment and also trying to finish my Bat project of the Modern farms first, but I will go on with the story soon, give me another week or so and I will have a full update with pictures of the story. I write a little almost every evening. Meanwhile, here is a "preview" of the story coming up later.....Have fun.

UPDATE 85 A

"Ten Rocks"

Three knocks on the door draws John Gabber's attention in the early hours in his small office in Access Center.

<<" Come in", he says, dropping his pen on the desk to see who the intruder is.
"Hello Mr Gabber," says the responsable foreman of the Wimmerroad project, Al Baumer ", Could I have a few minutes of your time. Sir?"
"Of course, c'mon in and close the door", John answers. "Please sit down.  What can I do for you, Al?", leaning back into his office chair, interlocking his hands on his belly and looking directly at Al, who he knows is the best man for this job for the road to the coast.
"Well, Mr Gabber, we got a slight problem over in the Gibson County," Baumer says with a slightly worrying voice," I think we even have to detour the whole road somehow, because the plan for the road does not work out there anymore."
" What do you mean by derouting the road, what the heck can be that collossal to have me change the plan?" John interupted shortly, changing position on his chair to straight.
"Well Sir, there are some rocks in the way, or something.....ehem, and they are quite big and cannot be tossed aside by our machinery." Al ended his phrase looking at John to see his reaction. There's a pause, that made both speakers a little nervous and put them in a position of being uncomfortable. John took more time to fully understand what Baumer just said and he thought, what the heck can be that big to disturb so much to reroute the plans? Then he thinks he's got the solution, although it's very evident.
"Why don't you just blow them out the way.? John suggested." Go see Manny, he's got the keys for the explosives."
"Well Sir............, that seems not to be logical, because these rocks are very big, and I mean very, very big and besides.....well.....ehem.........they are in a formation of 2 by 5, perfectly aligned." Al explained and caused another long moment of total silence in John's office.
John's brain just went into fast drive for a few seconds, not quite fully understanding Baumer's problem and wondering what the heck he could probably be talking about.............>>>

See ya and thanks for leaving a comment.

Part 3 will come soon, this time with pictures.

UPDATE 85 B

"Ten Rocks"

John pulled himself up from his straight position in his offics chair leaning forward and reached out for his pack of cigarettes. He then slowly pulled one out of the package without ever leaving his eyes from Baumer, and then lighted it.
He offered one to Al, but Baumer does not smoke. After one long puff of that smoothing thick smoke, John asks in a voice that seemed to be too calm for the situation: " Ok now, explain that please. I mean what can possibly be a perfectly ligned up rock formation, a wall?. I don't understand what you're trying to tell me, Al." Taking another puff of his cigarette and waiting anxiously for a senseful and logical and understandable answer from Baumer.
"Sir, these rocks are all identical, at least 30 to 35 feet high, weighing approximately 55 to 70 tons each and are in two parallel lines of five rocks set partially into the ground, maybe something like .......35 or 40 feet appart from each other. The row is about 80 yards long on each side. I've never seen something like this before, and no one of the workers neither." Another smaller period of silence filled the room, but when no comment from John came, Al continued, "It looks like that it was done by some people, maybe another find of the aborigines, but if so, how did they bring them there? I seriously wonder how they did that. They're so freaking big!"
John couldn't help and it was stronger than himself: " Are you joking me this morning or what?", looking with one of his serious look onto Bauer and lifting his left eyebrow with concern.
"No Sir, you know I wouldn't do that. I am serious, couldn't be more serious about this and that is why I came for advice, because honestly, we are simply stuck there, in front of these....gigantic boulders. The Loggers disengaged the area around some of the rocks a little before I stopped them and they couldn't have been seen from the air because of the big tree growth that is covering everything out there. It's a jungle like forest."
John put out his cigarette, not even half smoked out. Al continued, " Could you come and have a look at this and tell us what to do, Sir?"
"Did you talk about this to Mike yet?" John asks. "He is the Projectchief."
"No Sir, we haven't seen Mike this morning and we can't go on without knowing what to do."
"Ok, ok..let me think", and only after a partial minute John got up to get his dirty and worn out brown leathercoat from the last war and his hardhat, "I will take my car and follow you. I have another contract to see this afternoon, so let's make it quick."
"Ok, Sir" were the last words they exchanged in the office and both were heading to their cars. >>

Thanks for the comments

Just read about your plugin strategy.  I suppose use a technique like city specific plugin folders, so the game doesn't always have to load seaport and airport stuff, etc...Alas, I will have to strategize on a plugin method as I explore the new Sim City next year....BTW interesting region, so much!
