Hello, everyone.

So like so many others these days I have lost my job and have too much time to spare.  To help fill some of it, I decided I'd give SC4 a whirl after several years of not playing.

It's pretty crazy starting out from scratch and for many days it seems like I was downloading content and hunting down dependencies more than I was playing, but I've finally gotten to the point where I'm actually playing the game.

I have to say I was surprised to see there's so much development on the game itself.  It's a great game and has always had a great community making it better.

My only problems stem from the fact that I am running Vista 64 bit, and cannot run three programs that I'd really like to.  Two are the Mapper and Terraformer, and the other is this Cleanitol which sounds awesome and actually necessary for some reason to find Deadwood's dependencies.  That's my main issue right now.

I've gotten around the Mapper and Terraformer thing by installing them on my laptop, which uses XP Pro and is networked with this computer.  So it's a little clunky but it does work.  The laptop is strictly a work computer and so I like to keep personal stuff off it, but I guess those two little programs won't hurt.  The real problem comes with Cleanitol, which has to be installed on my desktop computer.  I cannot get it to work for anything, and believe me I've tried everything.  EVERYTHING!  haha.  I know most people have eventually gotten it to work but I have tried what they did and it still doesn't do the trick for me.  I've spent many hours on this and have given up on the program.  Period.

And that brings me around to this.  I was browsing the LEX for parks and found Deadwood's freeway walls.  I go to download them and it says I must use his master dependency list; it does not list the dependencies on the download page and I think it says to ignore the readme.  So I follow the link to his master dependency list.  Says it's available as a Cleanitol file and there's an HTML file, too.  However there's only one file in the ZIP...an EXE.  I run that and it wants to install something to do with cleanitol.  There's no sign of an HTML file.

Now I probably have the dependencies as I downloaded an absolutely enormous file with a bunch of stuff in it at The Pirate Bay (I know, I know...but when you're starting out it's so much easier), but I cannot know whether I do or not.  I suppose I'm just out of luck with these freeway walls and ALL of Deadwood's stuff, I'm guessing, and that really sucks because I remember him as one of the best of the best.  I mean when you don't play a game for several years and yet you are still familiar with the name of a guy, that means he's prolific!

Long story short, is there a work around for me?  Please do not try to get me to work on Cleanitol anymore.  I'm up to my ears with it and have forsaken it for good.  It's not just the freeway walls or even all of deadwood's stuff; I have a feeling once I start digging around I'm going to run into more situations like this.  Need a permanent way to find dependencies.  From what little I've downloaded directly most of the creators still do provide dependency lists so that's great, but I'm sure I'm going to find some who don't.

For now I'll soldier on and hope for answers.

If you look to the top of the page here there is a row of icons.  The middle one is a box and if you click that it will take you to a slightly outdated, but still not bad, dependnecy list with links to the files.

Also, I would recommend removing the file you got from pirate bay, you will find you get no support from developers if you can't say how you installed their stuff.  This is especially true for things like CAM and NAM which have careful installation instructions.

I would also recommend, if you can stretch the budget, to consider donating to keep the site running and to get you're hands on the SC4D LEX DVD, which will provide you with better options than the Pirate Bay file.  ;)

Hi there debaser first off sorry to hear that you have lost your job in these tough times.. Second of all welcome to SC4D and I am sorry your having problems with Cleanitol... But one thing I can assure you that wounagaine can help you to get cleanitol to work for ya's without a problem as since he created it... Now about your issue with Deadwoods master dependency list did you run the installer at all?  After running the installer it should have popped up a new window as a readme formatt that is the Master Dependency list...

A great way to also make sure you have all the dependencies is to get the LEX DvD if you can afford a small donation of around 30 dollars...

Patrick

PS I will try to get back to you as soon as possible got to run now....

Don't forget the SC4D Podcast is back and live on Saturdays @ 12 noon CST!! -- The Podcast soon to Return Here Linkie

Instead of downloading from The Pirate Bay you should take the time to download the dependencies from the LEX.
As has been pointed out you will get no support from anyone if you download files from there or any other similar site.

The Highway Walls have actually only two dependencies: BSC Essentials and BSC Textures Vol01.

The Cleanitol file is actually a small .txt file, and can be opened without the Cleanitol itself as well. It will not check for the dependencies then, but it will still give you the links to the dependencies. I've extracted the lotnames and links from the file and I have quoted them here. I'm not sure how up-to-date the links are, but if one of the links doesn't work you can always look it up in the SC4D Dependencies List

Okay.  Lots of good info here.  Thank you all.

As far as losing my job goes, I count myself lucky in that I'm young and have some money to fall back on.  I'm in much better shape than many are.

As far as the pirate bay stuff goes, as far as I could tell it was just the same thing you'd get here.  Installers were included.  I put in the NAM and CAM myself as the files had been updated since then.  There are two similar torrents on TPB.  One is a bit smaller...I don't know what is in it but it's seeded a lot better.  The one I chose had all the files including installers and readmes.  It hasn't given me any problems at at all and was actually a good way to start if you ask me.  Most of it is BATs, not mods.  There were a few mods included but I didn't install them.  Anyway it was just as if the uploader had downloaded everything and put it into a torrent.  It took a whole day and night to download but I was out of town so it worked for me.

The LEX DVD would be better.  No doubt it would have much more on it.  However even though I do have a nest egg I am still unemployeed and do not qualify even for unemployment payments.  Since I don't have any income but plenty of expenses, and I don't know when I'll find another gig, I don't think I should be spending money on DVDs.  As much as I'd like to, I can't do it right now.

The installer for the freeway walls did not bring up anything, but thanks to Barby I now know that I do have those dependencies already.

Lastly I do not believe this site existed when I last played.  It was not in my bookmarks at least.  Anyway thanks for pointing out the dependency list as I'm sure that will be a great help.

BarbyW

The point is that none of the torrent sites should be passing on these files. They may have them in installers etc but you cannot be certain of them and as a matter of principle they are not supported on any SC4 site. In fact linking to torrents is a bannable offence at most sites.
