Why does my game freeze?

It started happenining slowly. My game would freeze for just minutes than it would take longer, during different times I played. Than the freeze took right over and I couldn't even get back to my desktop. I had to shut my computer off from the back. Anyone else had this problem? Any solutions? Please.
