Sweetness.  Thanks a lot dobs; that's a superb map!   ;D

Also, I recently rendered your Oahu map using the TSC terrain mod and PEG's hawaiian holiday water.  It looks great.
(click for full).

epicblunder, I must ask you to change your image from a .png file to a .jpeg. Most of the time, a .png file turns out to be very large which makes it slow to load and takes up unnecessary bandwidth. Yours is nearly 20 MB, so I have deleted it and provided a link for those who wish to see it.  -Joan (Jmouse), SC4D Administrator

edit:  .png replaced with .jpg.
Again, my apologies for the filetype mixup.   "$Deal"$

Hi dobs,

I'm amazed with the quality  (and quantity too  ;D) of your work with the maps.

I would like to post a request. How about the Thessaloniki (Thessalonica) region in Greece? It's my home city. I tried making it myself, but with the 8-bit technologies I'm using the result was not very satisfactory, and had several technical problems too, so I abandoned it.

The area I'm interested in isn't that large, and in addition I find that large regions not only will never filled by the players, they cause the cities to be loaded/saved much more slowly. So I would rather prefer a relatively smaller region, like 7x7 large tiles (still larger than the maps I usually play on). If the map is about to be accurately scaled, a good rectangle could be 22°41'15"E (just west of the delta) to 23°01'10"E (town of Thermi) and 40°28'00"N (just north of the town of Mechaniona) to 40°43'00"N (town of Oreokastro). This includes quite interesting geographical features. If you are for a larger or scaled-down map you could include the mouths of rivers Loudias and Aliakmon to the west and lake Coronea to the east. Btw I see you upload your maps in .png format. Is this a standard .png, that can be processed (basically cropped) with an image editor? In such a case a larger map would be good (players could crop the map and extract the part they are mostly interested in).

And some points that could cause troubles:
- Some areas are below sea level. Check the images in this thread. Not sure if all those areas are below sea level or it's just the quality of the data I used (cgiar.org) but some really are. Btw what data are you using?
- River Gallikos may be a little hard to make, as the bed is shallow, while its banks can be quite steep in places. Not sure if the standard river tool can do this easily.
- Rivers in general can be troublesome, because elevations are low.
After making so many maps, I'm pretty sure you know how to cope with these.

It would be great if you make this map. I could help with reviews and testing (prior to releasing it).

Cheers

G'Day Devotees,

I trust we all had or will have a marvellous Christmas, and everyone gave and received what they wanted.  ;)
And the festivities keep coming so I hope everyone will have a great New Year.

Thanks Guillaume and I shall send you some details after New Year. ;<).

Eugene, Thanks mate. Male' is is not quite finished yet, it's in the pot with the rest of the ingredients.

Welcome Cogeo and thanks.

Thessaloniki is now on the books. The map will be scaled to 1 large city tile - to 4096m. I scale for longitude only across the point of interest, in this case Thessaloniki. On the large large scale maps I have made I scale the longitude across the northern and southern boundaries but with the smaller 1:1 scale maps have found the difference in longitude between the north and south to be only a few metres.

That .png map is the only one, the older 8bit maps still available are all in .bmp with the remainder in.SC4M format. I uploaded that when the stex was a bit flaky and not accepting uploads over 8MB. It is a standard 16bit .png and as such can only be edited in a 16bit capable editor. Editors such as paint.net or the GIMP can only resave it as an 8bit image, it will become very blocky and submerge below the sea level.

Yes below sea level, that can be a problem. I have made a few that were below sea level Norwich and Oldenburg, Rotterdam although I haven't released it yet and Volgograd. Once I developed a technique They became much easier to deal with.
I mostly use SRTM data, I am not overly keen on CIGAR's void patching technique also they wriggle the data a little and it is a bit different to the standard SRTM. I recently received some 1 second data for Australia, all the voids have been patched and and the striping and vegetation removed, it's nice to use. ;<)
Hmmm I don't know either. I don't use terraformer for editing only to make the .SC4m file and take an overview pic. I use photoshop to make the maps in.

No worries I'll send it to you for bug testing.

G'Day Devotees,

Well today sees our beautiful Earth turn another year. Happy Birthday Earth, 3 hearty cheers to you!

The old map-o-matic has been running in overtime and overdrive and for the year seen 150 maps purged from it's innards.
I find I still have about 30 map requests and as such I am closing the request book for the time being until I have completed them and then probably have a little rest also.   :o
Some of you may not realise but I am away 6 months of every year working so those 150 maps were really completed in 6 months, almost 1/day.

Thanks Guillaume

And a New Year show? Why of course.

Lonesomely rattling about in the map box courtesy of VT_Railroad_Guy is....

Johannesburg is 73.728 x 73.728.

G'Day Devotees,

I hope everyone who could got merrily drunk and those who couldn't will just have to wait until they're older. I knew she couldn't, the map-o-matic has been smoking up a storm this week and sees another lovely batch of maps for one's enjoyment.

Thanks Izi, I trust you and yours enjoyed a bubbly New Year. Chin, chin drink up my good mate. Your maps are looking better all the time, keep up that grand parade.

Thank you Guillaume, I also hope you had a splashing good time for New year. I have just about finished your tutorial for the maps. ;<)

Absolutely amazing maps, dobs.  And the map-o-matic's bearings must be smoking.
