SC4D "DYTR Awards" Proposal

Simtropolis has had their own awards congratulating particularly awesome members for several years now, as well as CMLs. But SC4D's methods for congratulating awesomeness are more limited - CMLs are nice, but they don't really seem to qualify as awards; and K-points are nice, but it's not as easy to tell why people got them. (I don't know about other people, but the site won't let me see people's K-point stats at all, not even my own.) And SC4D has a much different climate - more knowledgeable members, more high-quality files on the LEX, and although the rules are stricter, I think they make the site a nicer place overall. And some people and custom-content teams (NAM, BSC, probably others) have abandoned ST for various reasons, bringing their own personailties, peculiarities, and high-quality SC4 custom content with them. So I'm proposing that SC4D have its own "Dude, you totally ROCK!" Awards to celebrate certain members who totally rock, for various reasons.

Any thoughts?

The award discussion has been had many-a-time before and has been nixed virtually every time. In my opinion, they essentially become a popularity contest, not meritorious. That's just me, though.

Awards? Did Jeroni get a puppy for Christmas?  :D

I have to agree with Dustin. Personally, I don't see a point in most Awards Ceremonies, aside from at the Olympics, or other competitions where there are things that can be measured, such as speed, distance, and final scores. For the most part, anything else quickly turns into a popularity contest, no matter how much thought is actually put into the determination of such awards. People and projects will be overlooked, as it's just the nature of the beast, and then people feel overlooked, and less important and valued to our community than they truly are.

I feel that it's far more important that each and every one of us let each other know how we value one another, and appreciate all of the work involved in not just running this site, but making it all that it is, on a daily basis. No contribution should ever be taken for granted, no matter how simple or complex it is. And it's up to the membership, moderators and administrators of this site to make sure that we all feel included. That is the only way for our community to thrive. Not awards based on opinion, a lot of which are strictly for the staff.

Here, we notice everyone that isn't around for a while. Right now, we miss Pat (who, by the way, is supposed to be keeping the list of people we miss up to date  $%Grinno$% ). We miss dedgren (David), and wish him a speedy recovery from pneumonia. We miss Colyn and Jeroni, and hope that reality gives them time to get back here, and back to the game they love. We miss all of our friends.

My friends here have let me know how much they missed me while I was gone, and how happy they are that I'm back now. That's enough of an award for me.

Can there possibly be any doubt that the heart of the welcoming committe at SC4Devotion is Joan (jmouse)? I think Adrian (adroman) is stepping up on that committee as well.

Team Spirit Award? You know, you'd probably expect me to say BSC. But we aren't ready to give ourselves that pat on the back just yet, because that defeats the purpose of the team. We know that we can do even better in 2010. And I hope that every team out there is ready to step up their game as well.

BAT of the year, lot of the year, mod of the year? Yeah, that's a little thing we like to call the LEX. You just can't get that anywhere else. And I, personally, enjoy making sure that only the best gets on there. I know that BarbyW and all of our other LEX Scrutineers feel the same way. You have no idea how much we rock!

I won't speak for the other staff members, but I know that we just don't need any Awards around here. Not to mention, I'm from Florida, so my vote wouldn't count anyway.  :P

Thank you for that, xxdita, but I don't think that I could compare my few postings to Jmouse's constant efforts to make all new comers welcome...

I too do not believe in it, I think that once again it will come down to popularity... who belongs to what team... and all of that. I think that the awards in this community are the kind and helpful comments that are made on everyone's works. I think that the as soon as the community starts handing out prizes the community will fracture, instead of being many members working for excellence... it will become everyone working for an individual prize. I have found the community very welcoming, and I have made many new friends here... and I don't think I would've if people started judging each other their Prize winnings.

I think that the community spirit that exists here is enough, we don't need to start "grouping" one another based on quality of work...

Just my opinion...
Havva good one,

Thanks for the compliment, Nate and Adrian! :) Welcoming new members to our community is just "Good ol' Southern Hospitality." I don't expect anything in return. But when one of those new members takes me up on my offer to help...well, there's just no finer award - or reward - anyone could give to me.

Ever hear the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Well our system "ain't broke" by a long shot, so there's really nothing that needs "fixing!"

Later...
Joan

The problem with awards here is that everyone would have to have one because everyone here is just awesome :)

Couldn't'a said it better myself!  &apls

I must say that I've been convinced now that the "DYTR Awards" aren't in the site's best interest. Not only do the people who get awards "get big heads", as TheTeaCat said, but also the people who don't get them may feel cheated out of something they think they deserve.

So you're saying I got a big head because I got one from SimTrop for my maps?  I take offense to that buddy. :P $%Grinno$%

Me, I don't care one way or the other.  I think not having awards here is one of the many  things that makes SC4D unique.  Actually, it's reward enough getting uploading rights to the LEX
