Coming to California? Hehe, enjoy!!! Sounds cool. And, I'll be patient. See you in California dude.
Best movie of all time: Ferris Bueller's Day Off. If you disagree, Cameron will send your car over a cliff.

Please, call me Leo.  I quote John Lennon now, a great musician and philosopher. Particularly, one of his songs: You may say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one. I hope someday you join us, and the world will live as one.

Congratulations, my friend! It's always nice when you can get a bit of a change in your work without having to go through the hassle of actually getting a different job. I wish you all the best, and good luck in the Golden State!

Sim Shady

Congratz!  Now you can enjoy 70 degree winter days like me  :P

Hope this dramatic change doesnt make you feel like stopping your amazing work here!

Very good news Jon...congrats now and don't forget to tell us when you find out which part of California you'll be in.

On a side note.....Jeronij....could use a computer science building..or maybe a campus nursery (after all, he has to manage all of us here on this site...so......)

Anyhoo...like the new lots today and have good Monday.

Jon,
Fantastic work you did on the doorways
Fits in much better with the overall look of the building I think

Congrats too  for escaping the cold and best of luck with your new job. I spent 17 years in the catering business as a hotel manager but it burned me out and while it was work I loved, the stress and the hours took their toll. Good to see that you are enthusiastic still, but remember to take time for yourself too.  ;)

These are looking awesome JB

That has always been something that lacked in simcity. The universities were way too small ;)

Sorry you're going to have to suffer California (or the populace anyways.. ;) ) but I'm sure you'll adapt.

The buildings look good.. I love the dorms or whatever.. those are typical "hi-rise" dorms often ereccted in the 70's and 80's dorm booms..

The hi-rises here at THE Ohio State University ;) are the Lincoln and Morrow towers.. they aren't quite your style IMO but you might take a look at em sometime.. I'm sure they are well represented on the net.. I haven't looked though. I didn't attend via those towers, but once stayed in them as part of a seminar I attended for a week or so one summer .. it was a bit of a trip

simdad1957

Good luck in Calfornia, I've been there several times and you can't beat the weather (although you may have to contend with earthquakes, mudslides and wildfires depending on where you are). Personally I like northern California better than around L.A. (although San Diego was nice).

At this time of year, I sometimes wish that my mother (born in the USA) had applied for dual citizenship for me before I had turned 18 years old. Another 25 cm of snow in Moncton today (sigh); my back aches and I'm running out of places to pile it.
Go Sens!!

Holy buckets!  Quite a bit of response for a "non-update"...  :D  Ready?  Set?  Go...

TopCliff:  It certainly sounds that way.  Napa and Fresno are both on the list, but I'm not sure what the others are...

Thundercrack:  Thank you!  This company has always offered a lot of variety... I've been involved with 7 different camps since joining them.  It's nice to be able to change jobs without actually having to change jobs...  &Thk/(  :D

SimShady:  I'm definitely looking forward to the weather, yes.  I doubt that I'll be stopping this anytime soon... if anything, I'm liable to get overstimulated again.  ::)

Duane:  Thanks!  I'll be sure to mention more details as I get them.  Computers or some tech building sounds like a good idea.

Robin:  Thank you!  To be honest, the "end" is nowhere in sight for me yet... but the time when everyone can start building is still looking pretty good.  I think we're still on track for March.

Pat:  Thank you!  This was a very unplanned coincidence between the two things.  The talk of this possible transfer has been going on for a while, but it had nothing to do with this project.  Maybe I should have returned to it sooner!   :D

Derry:  Thank you on both counts!  I worked in restaraunts for about 5 (maybe 6?) years before I got into this aspect of things full time.  The pace and stress were certainly higher, but I enjoyed it.  I still love what I do... which is good, because I'm not real sure what else I'm qualified for...  :D

Mom:  No problem!  Actually, I don't think I knew that, although I suppose I should have guessed.  (For everyone else... the shape of Payce/Rooker Hall is based on a dorm where both of my parents and I attended.  The real thing in this case is only four stories tall, but the layout is pretty similar.)

AlfredJones:  Thank you!  I agree and I'm glad to hear they will be useful.

SC4Boy:  Thanks!  I've enjoyed my visits to California quite a lot, although to be honest, they've been very limited trips.  I'm sure it has it's good and bad points, just like anywhere else.  I recognize those names from Ohio State (O how I hate...lol), but I'll have to have a look for some pictures.

Simdad:  Thank you!  I haven't been to northern California yet, but I've heard many good things about it.  My time in state has been limited to the LA area... mainly northern Orange County and the Hollywood Hills areas.  There were parts I really enjoyed, and others that were almost a little disappointing.  We've been fairly lucky with the snow here so far... not much at once, just cold.

Whew... thank you everyone for all your kind words and wishes.  I'm honestly a bit flattered and amazed.  I think this kind of thing is what takes this community to a whole different level than others.  That honest comraderie that has nothing to do with the subject we're all really here for but so many people feel just the same.  It's such a great atmosphere to be a part of and I thank you all for making this site just what it is.

Speaking of what we're all really here for...  I've got some things to show tonight!  The work day ended up being significantly longer than I had planned on this morning, so no real modeling got accomplished today.  I did however manage a few other things.

First up is the walls.  My problem with the foundations was indeed an issue so small and obvious, that I felt like an idiot.  They now work as I had hoped, at least so far.  Here's a very early look:

My hope is that the ivy will look decent regardless of how high or low the wall ends up being.  Still a little tweaking to do there, but it's close.  The circle highlights an issue I fully expected, but am still hoping to fix somehow.  Basically you are seeing the concrete cap from one lower lot bleeding onto its neighbor lot.  There are easy ways to fix this, but they would make the lots a little tougher to work with... so I'm hoping to come up with another solution.  Eventually, I'm hoping to make 3-5 different versions of this.  Different ivy patterns to break up the repetition mainly.  So far this is just testing the concept.

Moving on... I also lotted the other dorm.  I didn't plan the paths at all for this one, and it seems I lucked out.  They lined up pretty well.  Here's a look:

This is a 5x4 lot.  I'm considereing doing a 45 degree version of this one as well... maybe setting up a lot with two buildings on it.  I'm not sure yet, so we'll see.

I realized that I forgot to mention a couple things about the other two lots.  Payce/Rooker Hall is a 5x5 lot... and DeBussy School of Design is also a 5x5 lot.  I also forgot to snap a night game picture of DeBussy (I was still mad about the light leak on Payce/Rooker at the time) so here that is:

I think that covers everything at this point...

Those look fantastic. And, no joke, but those walls look EXACTLY like the ones at my school. With the vines and the red brick, it almost makes me feel like I'm suffering another History lecture on the importance of Delphi. Good job, keep it up.

Well Jon...all is looking very good...starting to develope the "sweaty palms syndrome" for the univ tho :D   I am a native Arizonan and have lived just about everywhere.....but  grew up (for a fixed value of grown up) in California.....it is a beautiful state in many ways....with a ton to offer....quite a lifestyle change tho.....and if you've only seen the fringes of LA you havn't seen Californina....you will certainly enjoy it...

JB, only YOU would move from Michigan to California to lead a more "structured" life...    :D

Many people move to sunny locales to escape the perceived sense of commitment and obligation they feel pressing down on them in the cold North.  Personally, I have zero problems with the weather here.

Sim Shady

I do hope you are ready to pay taxes like mad :P

Actually i dont think theyre that much worse than other states, but thats not what i hear from my californian friends  :P

DFire870

Well, I guess you're going to be one of the few people that are actually moving to California. :D

In reality though, California is great. I can definitely say that California (specifically either the San Diego or the San Jose area) would be the second place I would want to live in the US after Central Texas. Every time I've been to California (which has only been like 3 or 4 times, but still) I've loved it. Although I'm not too surprised, considering many people from Northern California have moved to Austin.

After a long absence, I'm back! And I will be starting a new MD soon.

Well, it's been a while, but let me just say great halls, and great walls. The ivy looks pretty good with the slope, and I'm sure you'll get the cap thing hidden. They look pretty good in their two segment sections, but have you tried it in 1 wall segments? Also, are these walls set as props (and if so have you made them slope-conforming with the PM)?

I'll be curious to find out where in CA you'll be making your home. Out of curiousity, if you wish to share, which food service company do you work for?

Take it easy, and I'll be back by sooner this time around.
