Ok, after two classes with Heblem, I now know how to take DEM data and transfer it to 16bit greyscale and have just completed my first accurately scaled map ;D  which just happens to be the area where I was born and raised.  The place in question is Santa Barbara California and the map is 8x5 larg tiles, encompassing Santa Barbara, Montecito, Carpenteria, Goleta, Isla Vista and Winchester Canyon areas.  Also featured are La Cumbre and Cathedral peaks, San Marcus Pass and parts of the Santa Ynez River and Lake Cachuma.  Here's a pic of the rendered map, the overview image will be posted later on.

Don't worry Hebs, you time and effort will not be wasted ;)  NHP will most definitely reap the benefits of my new skills ;)  Thanks to you to Pat, I'll be posting the OV pic here in a few minutes as an edit to my above post, just have to shrink it down in size and upload it to Imageshack

And thank you Robin.  I'm glad you like it
