Now that you mentioned modern schools... =P

I do want to see a modern secondary school (at least 1) as there seems to be none in the current pack. However, Lincoln Elementary seems to be quite modern in comparison to the other three in the same pack.

Vancouver here does have numerous new schools, especially in the outskirts of the city.

JBSimio? Tackle a modern building? No way!

It looks awesome though. Can't wait to see more.

And have a nice time up in beautiful Petoskey. I must admit I'm jealous: I haven't been up north in years!

Nicodeme

Hey Jon,

I have a suggestion for the back of the building you based off the Rookery building. I recently stayed at this magnificent hotel in Spokane, Washington, called the Davenport. It was built in 1910 and the inside is just gorgeous. The outside is even better. Anyway, my suggestion is maybe to add a large patio deck.

You can sorta see it here in this pic.

I can get more pictures of the building for you, but I can't get to the actual patio anymore (You can only access the guestroom floors if you have a key). Below is a pic I took from my room when I was there.

Really nice work here, JBSimio!

Pat Riot:  Thanks!  I'm glad you like it.

Matt:  Thank you!  Yes the curved wall is part of the caffeteria (in my mind, anyway! ;) )  The temporary job that I'm at right now has nothing to do with the company I had been working for... I'm completely finished with them now.  I'm not too concerned about things working out eventually... I seem to have several options in the works so far.

Leo:  Thanks!  To me, many newer civic buildings look pretty interchangable, like you said.  So I guess if this one does too... that's a good sign!  :D

XiahouDun:  That is a little strange...  this school was actually based off of a single picture I found that includes a few pieces in the front.  The back is completely fabricated... ;)

Pat:  Thanks!  Yes... England as in where the British people live (unless of course they move elsewhere, I suppose)

Mauricio:  Thank you!  I'm glad you like it.

Allan Kuan:  Thanks!  You're right, I really haven't done a modern high school yet... but I definitely intend to for Volume Five.  Washington HS was probably the closest so far... but even that is an older school that has been added onto several times.  I always considered Parkside and Lincoln to be about the same time period.

Nofunk:  I know... let the craziness begin!  :D  I haven't been to this particular camp in nearly 5 years, so it's very nice to be back here.  It's gorgeous, although still pretty cool temperatures so far.

Nicodeme:  I like that building a lot.  It actually reminds me a bit of the Buder Building in shape and size... but there are still some very interesting differences.  I may have to file that one away for future reference.  Thank you!

Bat:  Thanks!

Just a quick update for now... as you can see, I do indeed have internet up here, but I haven't had a whole lot of time so far.  I did manage to get some rough textures on the new school (which doesn't really have a name yet), and I'm pretty happy with most of them.

I think the "red" will be a little bit brighter... and I'm not real happy with the gym roof yet.  There are a couple other tiny things here and there... but otherwise I think lighting will finish this one off.  Any other suggestions?

I'd love to see the picture. Would be incredibly bizarre if it was the same school  :D

Textures look great. As for the name, how about a president, like Harrison Elementary?
Current project: Movies 14

You may have meant to search for Houdini. (result of searching for XiahouDun on SC4D)

Building looks excellent.  Textures... well, the walls are nice.  I especially like the effect on the curved wall.

As for the roof -- the base texture looks great, but there seem to be splotches of red and green diffused over the image.  Is this an optical illusion?  (I'm aware that's a possibility.)  Because you wouldn't realistically see colors like that on a roof (unless they have an incredibly bad mold problem.)  Try toning the colors towards earthier tones -- brown, dark orange (leaves -- this is a low roof, after all), maroon, etc.  Water damage would usually give you darker tones; maybe a bit of brown coloring, but not bright green.

Y'know, not to be pedantic or anything...  ::)  I spend too much time on Google Earth, 'tis all.

yeah more schools! It looks awesome jon. The texture coloring of the roof is unusual, but I think i like it it. I like the current shade of red, and in fact the "sedate" look of the colors seems to really fit.

If one of those options is modelling for movies, you might have an idea there. The school is looking pretty good at this point. The roof textures seem a bit dark, and the main roof seems to have some noticeable circles on it. I agree with ACE about the green color too. I don't think it should disappear entirely, but perhaps tone it down a bit. I don't know if shingles are the right way to go with the gym roof, perhaps something metallic, sheet metal or something like that. Also, the lighter red seems like it will work well, the building as a whole right now looks a bit dark. To follow up on the naming thing, I like XiahouDun's suggestion, and continuing with the presidential thing, might I suggest Ford Elementary? Looking forward to seeing the lighting. It looks like there may be some interesting textures inside for them to show off. Until the next update, take it easy and keep us posted on the RL stuff.

Heblem

maybe for the roof of the gym try to make the ungrap UWV texture abit small (the squares) that actually looks kinda big... as for the entire model it looks great and nice choose of textures too  ;)

simdad1957

If you're looking for a name for the school, I suggest Laura Secord Elementary. You know who she is don't you; the lady with the cow who snuck through your lines to warn our militia that you Yanks were invading us at Lundy's Lane during the War of 1812. She helped to save Canada and now has a whole line of confectionary stores named after her thus ensuring her immortality!! :D :P
Go Sens!!

Zaphod

I really like that school.

As a modern school, it seems like it would be named after a recent important figure in education, society, etc. Like MLK, Jaime Escalante, Maya Angelou, etc. Either that or some vague 70's suburbia name like "Briarforest Shadows Elementary"

Anyways, I know you probably don't like to be bugged, but you had some other modern buildings, apartment complexes, did you abandon the project or are they sitting on someone else's hard drive waiting for modding?

The modern school is kinda small to be a regional one (maybe more of a community one).

We will need a larger building if it were to serve large areas or communities.

As for high schools, here are some images of a modern school that I have seen quite frequently:

And some modern university buildings...

And here's an elementary school pic:

Does anybody else have pictures of modern school buildings that they have seen?

XiahouDun:  Thanks!  To be honest, I'm not even sure where the real life school is... I just found the picture on a Google search.  ;)

ACE:  Thank you!  I didn't add any red or green to the roof... although I was experimenting with a couple effects, so I suppose it could have happened somehow.  I redid the textures either way... hopefully they're a little better now.

Edge:  Thanks!  I brightened the red brick just a little... but that's about all.

Matt:  Thank you!  I had been leaning towards a sheet metal roof already... and then I got another suggestion to change the roof altogether, so that's what I ultimately did.

Heblem:  Thanks!  I guess the roof texture advice is outdated now though... ;)

Simdad:  "You yanks?"  I'm pretty sure I'm not quite that old...  :D  Thanks you for the suggestion though!

Zaphod:  Thank you also for the naming ideas!  As for the apartments... as I mentioned not too long ago, those got left on my other computer which is currently in storage until I find a permanent address again.

Allan_Kuan:  Thanks for all the pictures!  I suppose it depends on what kind of "regional school" you want it to be.  I think that this size would be fairly realistic (at least by game standards) for a consolidation of rural districts... but probably not appropriate for combining 3 or 4 different "suburbs" into one district.  I do have one significantly larger elementary in mind yet... so we'll see what happens.  Modding is still a long ways off at this point.

Girlfromverona:  Thank you!

I made a few minor texture tweaks and some pretty obvious changes to the gym.  I think the pictures speak for themselves... so here you go:

I'm not entirely sure about the gym's new roof texture.  I think it needs a little tweaking yet.  Beyond that, I should be just about finished with this one after the lights unless there are any last minute suggestions.

hi JBSimio...just wondering if you could check this thread out. i thought you may have an opinion. its just about me being unable to bulldoze 1 of your school lots. its never happened before, or after....just this 1 time.....thanks!

The roof texture do look better, and the metal roof texture works well. I liked the pointed roof more than the current version for some reason. All in all, it looks great though. Good work as always.

You were given a solution and a link in your thread.. you have generated an "immortal lot" .. most likely by plopping a mall texture or similar onto the school lot.. it is a well known issue and the solutions are straightforward.. though possibly not fun.. :)

Earth quake

Wow, impressive bat JBsimo.
I like your texture, excellent work.

Jasoncw

Well, there's red and green in the roof because I put red and green in the roof when I made the texture.  ;)  I was still figuring out colors at the time.  JB must have adjusted the texture and somehow brought the colors out, and then reverted back to the original.  And don't ask about the giant waffle shapes.   :)

I think your roofs deserve their own custom textures, especially if you're going to use a texture that was never that great in the first place.  The base texture is MaxisAsphaultRoof.jpg, which comes with the BAT and is in gamepacks/textures.  A tutorial for customization is here]http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=37&threadid=58309&STARTPAGE=12]here, though it's missing it's pictures.  The part about woodchips isn't necessary, but the important part is the dirt.
