Nice progress on this beauty Jon! I love the amount of detail you put into it :)

We knew you'd be back. You are a master of detailing JB. That roof looks quite luxurious.

TopCliff:  Glad you like it... but you're right, the wait could still be a bit for this one.  Nice to see you again!

Pat:  Thanks!  I wasn't really gone... just took an extended and unexpected break.  :D

Tag_one:  Thank you!

Geoff:  Thanks!

Bit by tiny bit...

I do have a plan for the unfinished corners, so we'll see what happens with those next.  Today I managed to make the fountain, add benches and lamps, and laid out the shorter leg of the roof garden.  All the shrubs and small trees will come eventually, but probably not until the last thing.  This model is quickly becoming hard to work with and past experience with ivy says that adding too many plants now will just make this lag horribly.

More to come...

With or without plants, this is a lovely building which is highly anticipated by your many fans! :)

That does look rather complicated, Jon! Take your time - I'm sure it'll look stunning once it's finished.

Jon! This is absolutely beautiful! It's funny to find you making this building too, because I noticed it while I was in San Francisco last month and it really stood out to me. I love the roof garden and I'm glad to see you're taking the time to model it.

Keep up the good work!

fantastic work jon &apls &apls

Now that is looking good. It's a good sign when things look great even before any textures are applied. Little details like the trellis and fountain really add to the patio and yet things still seem fairly open for as much stuff as the area seems to have. Excellent progess.

Joan:  Thank you!  I really need to finish this up lest I annoy all those fans more than I usually do!  :D

Pat:  Thanks!  I did see that comment, yes... thank you for that as well.

Girlfromverona:  Thanks!  The hardest part is just keeping the views straight in my head.  I have to keep hiding things so I can see what I'm doing... then unhiding them to make sure I did it right... hiding them again to fix the stuff I didn't do right after all... well, you get the idea!  :D

Nofunk:  Wow!  It's great to see you again, sir!  How are you these days?  I had a chance to visit this building recently (you know I live very near SF now, right?) and it really is a great gem downtown.  It was really cool to be able to walk around the roof garden and see some of the parts I just couldn't get pictures of.  Oddly enough... I'd been considering this building for months before I even moved out this way!

Jacky:  Thank you!  It's very nice to see you again too!

Matt:  Thanks!  There is a lot up there, but it's such a large area, that crowding really isn't a problem.  The final test will be with all the plants done to see how much ends up getting hidden behind trees and such... but that's for later.

I think I finally have all the major pieces in place now.  There are definitely a few details to add and some things to fine tune... but this should be the last of the big changes as far as modeling goes.

The next (very daunting) step will be to start breaking this apart for textures.  That could take some time... but I happen to have some coming my way next week, so we'll see how far it gets.

Til then,
JB

Looking forward to the textures! Good luck

benvoliothefirst

Looks phenomenal so far!

Question: Do you usually work on more than one BAT at a time?

Also, when you say "break apart for textures," what exactly do you mean? Is there a tutorial that outlines the steps of how to do something like that?

pingangster

JBSimio, I'm a great admirer of your work, and this is no exception. Beautiful building choice and even better modeling. Can't wait to see this bad boy textured!
-Pingangster

JBSimio

Tag_one:  The process is slowly beginning... ;)

Benvolio:  Thank you!  Yes, I generally have several things going at once... it's part of what I always just call BAT ADD.  :D  (It also helps when I get stuck on one building to sometimes put it aside and work on something else for a bit)  By "breaking apart," I basically just mean ungrouping all the things I've done while making the model.  Especially with larger and more complex models like this one, I generally group things by side elevations while I'm modeling... it just makes it easier for me to hide the pieces I don't need to see at times.  The drawback to this method is that when it comes time to add textures, I have to pull all those groups back apart so I can get at the individual pieces again.  For example... all the window frames will ultimately get the same texture, but right now those pieces are stuck inside all sorts of different groups depending on their location within the building.  Not sure if I explained that all that well, but I hope it helps somewhat.  If not, let me know and I'll try again next time! ;)

Pingangster:  Thank you very much!  I notice this was your first post here... welcome to SC4 Devotion!

A couple things don't show up as well as they should because of the JPEG compression... but I'm just going to let this one speak for itself, I think:

Hello JBSimio, Jack wilds here...

A real big WOW and a  ...its really shaping up into good project... well done on all levels.  The gardens look so good I'd like to take a walk in it and see all the varieties planted there...  ;D

Glad that RL gave you a breather to get caught up on these projects, its been suspenseful... have you been walking the Clayhurst campus lately?

Northwoods has been rather wet with frost-dew and rain today so I thought I'd send enotes instead...  :D

Peace and health from the woods

Jack

You have no idea how much I'm fanboying over this new model :D I can't wait!
Current project: Movies 14

You may have meant to search for Houdini. (result of searching for XiahouDun on SC4D)

JBSimio

Jack:  Thank you!  I'm quite happy with it so far... hopefully it will get even better. ;)  Been foggy here in the redwoods... but definitely no frost!  I haven't worked much on the next installment of Clayhurst buildings lately, but they'll probably be next on my list.

XiahouDun:  Thanks!  I'm getting pretty excited about this one too.

The textures are coming together little by little...

Just a few more things to do on the roof and then I'll start in on the main walls of this section.

Til then,
JB

excellent and responsible amount of flora on this building.  I can only hope clayhurst p.2 will be on the lex server, not CD

JBSimio

Rushman:  Thanks!  I can only hope that Clayhurst EP1 happens before next year at this point... :D

Well this part is just about wrapped up...

I will definitely make some adjustments to the marble wall surrounding the roof garden.  I'm also not too thrilled with the upper level textures (the section above the arched windows) yet, but I can't put my finger on what might be wrong.  I've tinkered with them too many times for one day though... so I'll come back to those tomorrow.  After that it will be time to tackle the main building!
