But Dave, how on Earth do you dream up names like Clontarf?

Clontarf means "Bulls' Meadow" (Cluain Tarbh) in the Irish language, and is a place name used in several English-speaking countries.

Clontarf, Dublin, Ireland, a village and extensive district now a part of Dublin, made famous by the Battle of Clontarf. The other places named Clontarf probably owe their name to this settlement.

Just thought you'd like to know what it meant ;)

Robin's suggestion is a really good one mate ;)

Thanks for all the support everyone. Derry, you are right in saying Robin's suggestion made a lot of sense and that's how we will continue. Great idea Robin

So look out for:

Balnavia - The Provence of Clontarf

Kicking off within the week  :)

Derry, as SA mentioned, Clontarf is a suburb of Sydney, most certainly named by a good Irish immigrant. We have a historical family connection to that suburb which is why I picked the name (although that is an English branch of the tree). And if that isn't good enough for Joan, I'm in a lot of trouble  $%Grinno$%. I hate detention  ()sad() My surname is Power and that branch left Emlagh, Ireland in the early 1800's, so 1/4 of my blood is green  ;D

Bernhard, backups were made, just the new operating system didn't like them. Anyway, part 2 of the journey is about to begin and I hope you will be around to keep me honest.

Joan my friend, can always count on you to make my hat feel a bit tight with your fine words. Up for journey No'2. Hope so, couldn't do it without you.

Look forward to see you all visiting Clontarf soon.

Cheers

Dave

This is great news, Dave - glad you decided to make this a continuation of Balnavia! For those of you who haven't already done so, I urge you to Google Clontarf, Australia. It's beautiful, and I'm sure the game version will be just as loverly! :) I have a feeling we're in for some pleasant surprises here in the weeks to come so...

...seat belt fastened, helmet on - LET'S GO!

So I just read (well, skimmed) through Balnavia, and I have to say, it looks amazing! All of the cities seem to have this unique look which I haven't seen elsewhere. It's great to hear that it's not the end for Balnavia!

The Region Map – Province of Clontarf

Pic 0.1

Well here we go again, and keeping to my habit of not biting off more than I can chew  ::), Clontarf is only
a small map made up of 81 tiles (5 large, 36 medium and 40 small).

This is what you could call a Beta version of the map, the basic layout is set although I tend to add the
finer details to the landscape as I work on each tile.

Although not set in stone, development to the west of the range will be mostly small town and
agricultural. Larger cities with commercial and industrial zones will be to the east.

It is not evident from the pic, but the top left corner is a plateau/tableland, and is quite a bit higher
than the surrounding lands, although the following shot with the grid might give you an idea. Getting
transportation corridors down from there, especially rail with my slope mod, will be a challenge and a
half but something I look forward to.

Pic 0.2

Looks like a good place for a waterfall ;)

And for those who are interested, the following mods in no particular order are being used:-
BigRedFish Tunnel and Slope Mod
CPT Missouri Breaks Terrain Mod (may yet change)
Ennedi's Dark Granite 2 Rock Mod
PEGs Brigantine Water Mod

So there you have it, a new start. While this will not be a direct follow on from Balnavia, the Balnavian disaster will
work it's way into the storyline along the way.

So I hope you enjoy what is to come.

Cheers

Dave

projectadam

Dave,

Excellent intro into a new region to develop, even though nothing has been laid down yet on the map it sounds like you have a good master plan which I think will be quite interesting to see develop. Wish you the best of luck with the new region.

P.S. I do not know why but hurricane Vista made me laugh so loud I almost woke up the wife :D

In the wake of Hurricane Vista (great name) comes something really neat. While it's a shame to lose Balnavia, I think Vista has done something valuable here... given you a nice little canvas to paint anew. I like the map, and that mesa should prove interesting. I'll be curious to see what methods you use to tackle it.

Nardo69

Hehe, Hurricane Vista ...  :D

So you run on Vista at the moment? I hope you have an update option to Windows 7 because on my old machine Sc4 runs completely smooth (and better then ever before) under Windows 7 than it ever did under Win2K or XP. ;) And at the moment SC4 doesn't run under XP (makes only CTD) but only under Windows 7 ...

Promising map, that's for sure! And yes, I do look forward to your transport corridors!

Take care my friend!

Bernhard

Albus of Garaway

I'm so pleased to be here from the start this time! I'm really, truly looking forward to how you develop this region, especially the transition from the high tabletop to sealevel.

Scarton

Can't wait to see how the region develops!

Battlecat

Very cool, that's an interesting looking region.  Looking forward to the next update!

Pat

Dave I cant wait to see some water to that Waterfall...

Don't forget the SC4D Podcast is back and live on Saturdays @ 12 noon CST!! -- The Podcast soon to Return Here Linkie

bat

Nice work on that region and looking forward to more from Province of Clontarf and that waterfall...

Tomas Neto

Wow, very nice work here!!!

Jmouse

So far, you've impressed me with every element of your introduction to Clontarf – the newspaper, the RL photos and especially the region map!

I am both pleased and surprised to see some variations in elevation, and you're right about "...a good place for a waterfall." Watching Clontarf emerge from the soggy ruins of Balnavia will be a pleasure, so when do we start? ;)

Later...
Joan

Looks like something big is coming (no, not a new hurricane !  :P ) , that new map looks quite good for your new region Dave. The new waterfall (well, the layout, because there no water at the moment) is well done.
Take care and looking forward to the first step of urbanization of your new region Dave,
-Arthur.
I'll take a quiet life... A handshake of carbon monoxide.

projectadam – hehe, I'll try to keep things down to chuckle level going forward lol. Thanks for the
comments and I hope you enjoy the work so far.

threestooges -  Thanks Matt, although it is sad that Balnavia can't continue, it does feel great to have that fresh
canvas in front of you.

Nardo69 – Hi Bernhard, I am running Vista. For some reason it won't run the files from my old PC which was XP based,
but starting from scratch I have fewer CTD's with Vista than I ever had in the past (As long as I remember to shut down 3 of
the 4 CPU's that is). AND remember to make backups. Some wise man told me to do that once. ;)

Albus of Garaway – It's great to have you here and hope you enjoy the journey.

citycapitalizer -  Thanks, good to see you dropping by.

Battlecat – Thanks Battlecat, glad you like the region, but those mountains have me worried though. /wrrd%&

Pat – It's a little way off yet mate, but there will certainly be some water flowing down that canyon.

bat – Thanks bat, always appreciate your support of this MD.

Tomas Neto – Appreciate the comment, thanks.

Jmouse – "so when do we start?" Well here we go Joan, update 1. And I won't forget to include some
transportation maps
and stats along the way. But just in case, make sure you remind me :).

art128 – Please, no more hurricanes. Thanks Arthur

danielcote – The island is gone I'm afraid, but hope you can stick around for the new beginning.

Mods, Dependencies and Other Stuff

Here I will continue to list the various mods in play, as well as the more common 'ploppable'

The Region

1.01

In the region view I'll highlight the quad I'm working on so you always know where we are.
As things develop I'll also include transport maps and population stats. The first quad is called Paxton and as
you can see, it's located in the extreme NW of the region.

Paxton - The East Bank

Population
3,728

Employment
C: 1847
I: 1801

As the title suggests, this update concentrates on the east bank of Paxton, which is just as
well because there is nothing to the west. A small farming community, I hope you enjoy the following pic's.

1.02

This region was discovered in the early 1800's by an Irish adventurer named Paddy Murphy, who in typical
fashion was lost at the time. But he could recognise good farming land when he saw it and named the area Clontarf
after his home town, a small coastal village near Dublin.

1.03

1.04

Paxton was named after Thomas Paxton, who established a farm in the area some 10 years after it's discovery
by Murphy. He made his fortune exporting beef and donated a significant sum for the construction of the first town hall
which can be seen to the right in 1.05. For his efforts, the small town was named Paxton in his honour, he was made the
first Mayor, Fire Chief, Sheriff and Official Town Drunk.

When it looked like he was going to be voted out after just one term, he got sloshed and burnt down the town's only
polling station. After putting the fire out, he quickly issued a warrant for his own arrest, but mysteriously disappeared
before he could lock himself up. Many believe he was tipped off by someone within his own office.

1.05

1.06

Above is the small commercial centre and rail station. This town is now known as Upper Paxton with Lower
Paxton a few minutes drive to the south.

1.07

Here is one of the first churches built in the region, founded and still run by the Sixth Day Alertists. In their
world it is preached that any disaster, calamity or home team losses will always occur on a Saturday. Although this
doesn't explain why everyone buried in the graveyard below died during the week.

Of course such events can be delayed if you find time to visit the church on the sixth day of each week and
donate pray heavily.

1.08

A touch of luck. Up until taking the above pic of the small vineyard, I had never seen a train on a
single track line.

1.09

The original Paxton cattle farm. Although a lot of land has been sold off, it is still operational today.

After the mysterious disappearance of Thomas Braxton, management of the farm fell to Thomas' identical twin
brother, Tom, who conveniently arrived in town 48hrs after his brother vanished. The fact that he already knew
the names of everybody in town was put down to a psychic bond between twins.

1.10

1.11

Lower Braxton, the other town on the east bank and a lot larger than it's cousin to the north.
Split down the middle by Penny Creek so named because if you had to "spend a penny" in Lower Braxton
all your hard work ended up in the creek. Though it was the two penny jobs that really upset the locals
and their noses and they soon successfully petitioned for a sewerage plant to be built on the outskirts of town.

1.12

1.13

1.14

So there we have it, our first look at Clontarf. The west bank coming soon. See you then.

Jmouse

Aha, here we go indeed! Those first three pix seem to be a departure from your normal style – maybe it's because you're using a different palette. The trees look different, too, but I like the start you've made – I like it very much!

The church and cemetery (1.07) look terrific as does the commercial development which is quaint and appealing. The cattle farm (1.09) needs to be in the picture competition, and you've done a fine job with the water and surroundings (1.11-1.13). You've really outdone yourself this time and left me wanting more, more, more!

Outstanding job...
Joan
