Good to see things getting going again Fred. Will the new lumber competition mean increased productivity from an energized workforce, or will things be taking a different turn as lumber wars erupt? Nah, it'll be an energized workforce. Nice developments so far Fred. Looking forward to what's down the line.

Good to see an official update from the Winding River Region.  If a bunch of large Hotels go up on Valmore Lake it may be trouble or the cottage owners who likely want a private getaway, not a huge tourist area.  We'll have to see whappens I suppose.

Now in colour!

I like it Fred. The newspaper updates likely take some work, but they're a fun way to catch up on everything. I'll be sure to keep an eye on the mayoral race now too.

What a way to work yourself back into the fold :) That was a great update, as expected from you.

So Johnny B. Badd is getting himself into some trouble, eh

frostwolf

As always, the newspaper is a excellent touch.  Looking forward to seeing more soon

Can't wait for the next update.

Thanks everyone.
I will be gone for a whole week starting tonight. My wife decided that it was time to spend some time on the beach somewhere in the caribean islands because I am restless and impatient doing.....nothing.... well. I'm not allowed to work or force myself physically on anything, but I hate sitting around.
So a week on the beach will be just fine I guess.

I didn't have the time to put together another update, although most of it is done, but uploading an unfinished update is not really my thing, so you have to wait that week. lol

See you soon and thanks again for the comments, be back soon.

Update 56    Thursday September 30th, 1965
                  did you know today:
                                          - 1931 birthdate of  Angie Dickinson, American
                                             actress
                                          - 1947 – The World Series, featuring the New York
Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers, is televised
                                             for the first time
                                          - 1968 The Boeing 747 is rolled out and shown to the
public for the first time at the Boeing Everett
                                             Factory

It was the first sunset since weeks that was pure and clear, no humidity and no more extreme heat. The people in Access Center seem all to be released from these hot summermonths of 1965. On the radio they even say that it is going to rain this week and temperatures should become normal for this time of year. Only yesterday it still was 36º Celsius (97ºF), which is very hot for a 29th September.
Things in Access Center were slow this year. Not many new buildings actually in downtown, but a lot of places have been sold and wait for the green light to either move the new owners or demolish the premesses to make room for new developments. One thing in Access is moving though and has never slowed down. It is the expansion of the residential areas. Home constructions have been going on like crazy for the whole summer and new homes and roads appeared here and there on the outer limits of the town, and that in any direction.
One place where a lot of houses were built lately is the northern part of former Valmore south, meaning the westside of the Valmore lake. There must have been built close to two hundred new homes in this area where once rich farmland lied. Miss White bought her piece of land for her Summer Hotel a couple of years ago when it was still purely in the wilderness and today the totality of her land is surrounded by new homes, kind of a suburbs.

To really see the difference in the region, here is a picture from early 1964.....

pic.56.2

...and here below  the same picture from last month, August 1965. Both northwest and northeast have been expanded into new suburbs and are planned to expand even more next year.

We can clearly see the evolution of the place, so to speak. The federal Government is even talking about clearing the land for most of the surrounding Valmore lake for residential zoning. Something that Robert Yome and his friend Adrian McCoy do not agree with at all and they are making their points at the monthly municipal meetings. If the council refuses the "lake invasion", then the Government will not zone the land for residential construction. Unfortunetly it's the mid-sixties and the word conservation is not really a part of life yet.

Two weeks ago our Johnny B. Bad was caught with a small quantity of drugs right in downtown Access. Although the law is very clear about this, Johnny was cleared because of too small a quantity in posession. Lucky him, he thinks, but he better make sure not to get caught again. The case didn't even go to court. Former Police Chief,  now a trucker, knew that Johnny was into drugdealing since his arrival in town, but no one really listened nor believed him and when he went to the Police Office and told the new chief Kyle Roberts that he was always right, Kyle made sure that he understood that it was only a very small amount that Johnny was caught with and nothing more, not even a starting point to think about any accusation.

Still in the suburbs, here's a new picture of this fall. Closely situated to the airport, this part of Access is considered as the nicer side of town. It has the school in its neighborhood, the small pondpark that the mayor wants to build over not far away and the shopping mall at the end of the West street. If you live here, you would be able to walk wherever you need to go. One of the councils has mentioned last meeting that a way to raise the taxes should become necessary very soon. Now with many new services already working, and new ones in the planning, the town will need better funds and a good way to do this without ruining some folks is to increase taxes in certain areas more than others, like this below so called *beautiful neighborhood*. Right now taxes are equal for industrial, commercial and residential and are at 6.8 %. The office is about to change this since Access Center has the lowest taxes not only in the Winding River District, but also way below as other towns and cities, such as Bluebay with an average of 11% and Sandom which is about the same size as Access, of 9.5%. Cities, such as Beecher falls and Frampton have high taxes with an average of 12.5% to be able to survive and offer the services needed.
««" Our town has gotten to a point where we have to make choices before we ruin ourselves," the counceler said in the monthly meeting,"and instead of raising the taxes equal to everyone we should consider those people who earn a lot more and live closer to the services to have them pay a slighter higher amount of taxes than those who live further away from all the conveniences and even those who can hardly effort a taxrise. Also should commerces pay more and industries who make profit with our residents help." »»
His words were loudly applaused when he finished and sat down. The Mayor nodded firmly, showing that he is totally supporting his idea, so did did most of the rest of the council.

Also some new federal services have arrived in Access, such as the income tax bureau, welfare and immigration offices and finally the minister of transport has established itself in town. These Services are hosted in those new officebuildings that were built only last year in the south of the town. These very modern and futuristic offices have had brought in even some tourists from the bigger cities to see the wonderful technology of building with glass. This is new to 1965 and surely new to the Winding River Region.
Since it can not contain all the services of the federal Government, plans of more buildings like this are in the making, and before 1970 we should have about 2 to 3 more hi-risers like this in Access which is now reaching the 50,000 population limit. Oh my, times goes by so fast, remember when it was only at about 700 residents not so long ago?

Mayor Bartlett's wish to build over the old springwater pond where the town used to get its waters from in the beginning, has become an official subject. Many people reject the idea, of course mostly those who live near there. The land is town-owned and therefore a matter of the council's decision. Bartlett has been working on the council's decision and we probably will find out in the next meeting before the end of 1965. The Mayor's plans to offer the land to some commerces  and pay high taxes are a tempting matter for the councelers. The town of Access needs money soon, we all know that. It is growing so fast that it has become impossible to stick to the needed services with the actual budget they have. Every tax, every Simoleon from the town-owned services and properties are very welcomed. The mayor said in his last meeting that he will not be responsable when the town is going financially down, "Now is the time to do something, now that we don't have any problems yet, not when it is necessary, because then it will be too late and will cost us more to get out of the bucket. I can help you now, maybe not in two years."
A shame for those who would like to preserve the only piece of nature in the middle of town left, but I think that's it, it can easily become a supplementary income for the town, besides as Steven Bartlett puts it, "Nature we have everywhere outside of town, so much that we don't know what to do with it."
Good point, but what will he say in 2010?

I will be back with another update later this weekend. First I have to find out what the problem is why the game crashes when I try to enter the downtown area. It did it before, hope I don't have to rebuild the whole town again. This is also the second time that I changed something on the airport before leaving the citytile, maybe something to do with those airportfiles. I'm gonna have a look at it later this week. The next update will come from the Phlox area and also some new s from the miliary base in West River. A News conference is about to be planned, will they reveil what they're really up to now?
