Hey dobdriver,

I was wondering if you could make an up to date map of Dubai?  I am sure it would be a very popular map.

Dob,

I love your maps, but have one in particular that I would like to request. MallowTheCloud released this map back in 2006, but it was a bit smaller than what I wanted, so I figured I'd ask to see if you might be able to make it. It's southwestern Washington State (US). The lat/lon are:
NW Pt. - Lat N 46° 49' 55.2458", Lon W 124° 8' 9.2212"
SW Pt. - Lat N 46° 13' 59.8455", Lon W 124° 8' 9.2212"
NE Pt. - Lat N 46° 49' 55.2458", Lon W 123° 2' 19.0869"
SE Pt. - Lat N 46° 13' 59.8455", Lon W 123° 2' 19.0869"
My one weird request is, could you completely rotate it 180° so that the ocean is on the east side of the region? I'd like to make it an east coast city in the US.

I've attached a satellite map from Google of the region, lat/lon point to lat/lon point.

Thanks in advance if you take this on! :)

Would be nice to include some of Astoria, OR on this map as well, so that we can have the bridge connection to oregon.  Just my suggestion  ;)

That's cool with me, gives me some more room to work with on the map, and another bridge to add.

Hi Dob,

I know you're a busy man, but I was wondering if I could request two more maps?

The first is Sacramento.  Specifically, the area within the yellow box in the image below, spanning from the Yolo Wildlife Area/Kiesel to the west to El Dorado Hills and Auburn to the east, and from Elk Grove to the south to Lincoln to the north.

The second is the Twin Cities - Minneapolis and St. Paul.  Specifically, the area within the yellow box in the image below, spanning from Minnetonka to the west to Hudson, WI to the east, and from Apple Valley to the south to Blaine and Centerville to the north.

Thanks!!!

G'day Devotees,

Well today I thought I would show a few other things also, The map-o-matic is starting to awaken after a short lull time although I do not think I will produce as many maps as last year. That was a hectic schedule. Just so devotees are aware I am still working on a couple of very intricate maps and have decided to show a small piece of Vester's Blekinge. The total mask size is 22000px by 11000px and this snap is 800px wide. 1/27th of the total ;<)

When finished it will be painted 0c0b09 and laid on the dem.

I also was never happy about cutting Cape barren Island in half, I think it was for a lex candacy map. Anyhow recently I put together a new version made with 1 second SRTM dem. Yes I have Australia's 1 second dem from the shuttle mission ;<) and while putting her to bed accidently overwrote my old city files. I thought well I had better re-render the old west side map. Upon inspection  :o  :o I noticed the that the coastal definition was quite pox to put it mildly. It was one of my short lived techniques to try and speed up the process, quick and dirty but mostly dirty.

The dem quality is quite substantial too.

I have been trying out Lowkee's new terrain mod Ther are some things I don't like (but that is personal preference for ya) but there are plenty of things that are just brill. For starters the dats are assembled meticulously and not timid at all, The cliff textures are the best I've seen and the colours of the terrain just pop out here and there quite unexpectedly in the right places. Plus I even got a mention in the dispatches, Thanks mate. My biggest gripe is that there are only two snow levels in the standard mod, and well being a mapper I make quite a few that perhaps doesn't even get to those elevations at their lowest. I have started to hack around with it ;<)

Wow there's plenty of mail this week.

G'Day Paul and welcome. That will not be a problem, I have a map of 's-Hertogenbosch cooking as we speak, thanks.

Thanks Izi, you will certainly lose resolution if you scale your mask images before collecting the data. I have found I can collect data to 2-3 pixels width from the large scale and (un)reliably transfer it to the dem. Thanks and cheers.

Mr Starks you will be joyous to learn your map of Lisbon is finished and ready for a masterpiece or two, Cheers.

Csxt602 Welcome also, I have started your map and have included the addendum suggested by Portie. Thanks.

Namspopof you will be happy to know your map is finished, you will need to use plop water for the river however as with other European maps I have made elevations do not always bode well for rivers.

G'Day Criss, I am feverously working on your Rosario but thought I would crack this one though. Thanks mate.

Hey Supremec, g'day mate welcome back, Thanks I hope there is something you can use ;<)

G'Day Portie, Nice addition, I also have Sacramento finished, will start will start Minneapolis later. Thanks mate, Cheers.

And Eugene G'day too, Sure I can make Dubai, The World Islands look a little ugly though. not to worry. Thanks.

And now it's on to the show.

And first out of the gate is a request courtesy of DerekL Thanks mate.

Plumas County is 77.824km x 77.824km.

This is my first hack of the snowline. The carpeted part is the highest snow of Lowkee's mod and begins around 1500m. The snow in the other portions begin around 2100m. Like a little sugar frosting ;<)

Next up is a request courtesy Namspopof, Thanks mate.

Luberon is 77.824km x 57.344km.

This is where I changed horses mid race. As one can see it still tiles a little, north-south as opposed to Cp's mostly East-West.

Following along is a request courtesy of Woodb3kmaster, Thanks mate.

Cathlamet is 28.672km x 28.672km.

A small slice of the Columbia River.

And thanks to Iownadiscti for this next request.

Lisbon is 69.632km x 57.344km.

Mmm Lisboa.

Craig-Abcvs asked if I could make Raurimu, as it is very close to Mt Ruapehu I updated that map lifting it back to full height in the process.

Mt Ruapehu including Raurimu is 45.056km x 53.248km.

All aboard the curly wurly railway.

This map was requested courtesy of Cmdp123789, Thanks Criss.

Philadelphia is 69.632km x 65.536km.

One time Capital.

And thanks to Portie for this request.

Sacramento is 57.344km x 57.344km.

Oops I'm off the horse.

And last for this week goes out for drunkapple. What again!!!

Cape Barren Island is 45.056km x 40.96km.

And I'm back on the horse. Ladies and gentlemen the rider took a quick tumble but miraculously managed to regain his footing.

And so we come to another close for now.

Thanks for looking aand have a great day.

Cheers

Dear MapMaker,

as usual I am desperately drooling over your recent maps, but as usual I cannot have them, because (a) I'm on a Mac and so (2) I can't use the relevant Wouanagaine et al. and (3) there is never a greyscale -- and the result of trying to greyscale your maps myself has been, how to phrase it ? less than satisfying ! Is it absolutely (technically) impossible for you to make a greyscale file of your wonderful creations ?

Howdy dobs; good to see you're still at it!

I have a request for you if you're not too busy.  I was hoping you could do a map of Yakutat, Alaska:

but with a challenge.  If it's possible, could you please rotate it 60 degrees clockwise so that the coast aligns to a N-S axis like the box below. (edit:  or 30* CCW so it's E-W.  whatever is easier.)

I'm hoping for a 64km tall (max) x 48km wide region (basically what the box above covers).
The upper left corner of that box is about:
59*31'00" N
139*54'15"W

If for whatever reason the rotation won't work then nevermind on this map.  But I really, really hope you can pull it off.
Best of luck and thanks ahead of time.   ;D

Glad you like the mod, and thanks again for that water trick.  The water in that set is grey scale, all of the color comes from those "side textures".  If you didn't read in my terrain thread, this means that it would be possible to have a wide range of colors from the same water texture.  I see something interesting in the horizon, but haven't started on that project yet.

Can't please everyone, especially with the snow line.

Edit: Epic Blunder's second pic messes with my eyes  :P .  One of those "bet you can't believe the lines are straight" illusions.

G'Day Devotees,

Well, I've sort of been disappointed this week after my discovery that I have already created the largest map possible with mapper and terraformer. If you didn't see my post on it I'll recap.
The largest size map is 24 tiles square, achievable with win7 64bit and one 4GB module of ram. That's it.

With 32bit windows the largest achievable with two by 2GB modules is 20 tiles square. With one 4GB module it is larger but I don't know the exact size, I shall test to find out. This will also be dependent on video card memory. The more memory on one's video card the less memory is available to the operating system.

My notebook for the testing has 1GB of video memory so there will only be about 3GB available for mapper.

Today's grab bag of goodies has some surprises and a great mix of different terrains that I hope you will enjoy.

G'day Izi,
Yep that's right mate. Practice, practice, practice. You won't get perfect but you will get quicker, that's for sure. Your maps I might add are looking georgeous.

Thanks Namspopof,
You're welcome mate.

Thanks Art,
No I didn't know you were Portuguese, today's maps you will find interesting also. Thanks that's one thing I always dreamed of was to become the local drunk. Who'd ever thought I'd be the virtual drunk in a virtual town. I shall cherish it.

Thanks Guillaume,
How are your maps coming along?

Portie Thanks mate,
You're welcome also. Minneapolis has a few lakes.

G'Day and welcome Evarburg,
Do you ever feel like sometimes you are on the losing team? and I do not mean that to be disrespectful, just your Mac. I can make 8bit greys for the maps quite easily, although adding them to the upload could add up to 3MB to the zip file. The main problem though is height of maps, 1000m is the about limit theses should go otherwise terrible stepping occurs as there are only 256 shades to cope with the elevation. In short a lot of maps would look plain ugly as standard maps. I can rustle them a get you a pack together.

Cool Epic,
I've got something brewing for you.

G'Day Lowkee and welcome,
Cool I shall have to have a little play with that idea. I know what you mean about snowlines, you would need to add about 50 to please everyone ;<).

Thanks Supremec,
I don't think anybody could finish all my maps with their time left on earth somehow.

G'Day Willy,
You know you won't be able to stay away.

It's like a re-run of a re-run really. It's that time again.

Floating around on top of the map box this week is courtesy of a request from Biriali, Thanks mate for your patience.

Rotterdam is 65.536km x 65.536km.

It took sometime to find the exit!

Next is the rotated version requested by Criss, Thanks mate

Philadelphia is 61.44km x 53.248km.

The city grid now aligns nort-south.

And thanks to Paul999 for this next request.

Thanks again for your beautiful maps, dobs. I just have a quick question (for anyone who can answer). I'm creating my region via Mapper (Terraformer does not work on my machine) using the rotated version of the Philadelphia region. How do I edit the city sizes so that they aren't all large cities? Modifying the config file doesn't seem to do the trick. Mapper loads the region with all large maps regardless, and saves them as such.

Reason I ask is I want to put one string of medium maps along the bottom and the top of the region, and leave the rest as large cities. This would allow for downtown on an accurate model of the city to be built in the middle of a large map (whereas currently it would be split down the middle by the border of two maps). Is this editable or are the city sizes something written into the SC4M file?

Nevermind, I got Terraformer working :)
