Earth quake, you need DatPacker!!!
Just reached 4.4GB. I'm on a mission... $%#Ninj2

Shadow Assassin

Heh, I got a new laptop. Now, let's see...

With 2.26GB... it takes just 15 seconds for SC4 to load.

30 seconds getting into a large tile.

Previously, it took 3 minutes to get in SC4, 5 to get into a city tile. Nice, eh?

[and that's while I've got MSN, Firefox, everything running]

Oh yeah, and my plugins folder is on another hard drive. Thank you, UserDir command line!

Hey Shadow Assassin!
What specs does this fabulous machine have?
Is it the graphics card, the memory or the CPU speed that does the trick?

Shadow Assassin

Well, this machine's running:

A Core 2 Duo T9300 (one of the new 45nm ones, not yet available in other laptops)... specc'd at 2.5Ghz... damn, this thing is fast ;)
2GB of RAM
nVidia GeForce 9500M GS
200GB hard drive
Includes Vista Ultimate

I've had no problems whatsoever with Vista. Battery life's a little low (2.5hr), after all, this is the world's first 15.4" real gaming machine.

So that's a € 1000,--. Yes. Quite. Thanks. I'll wait a little while. :(

Shadow Assassin

That is cheap here, by the way. ;)

Average prices for laptops are usually around the 1600-1900 mark.

Unpacked I have 7500 files taking 3.4GB of space. Loading time is less than a minute into region view another minute into city view with the help of DAT packer :)

I keep everything neatly organised and recently switched all possible lots from growable over to plopable, to ease on the menus. I try to keep it in order, so now every new plugin goes into trial period. If I like it, it stays. if I don't I either modify it with LE or the reader or just remove it.

FrankU

Yep, I also have a subfolder called Testplugins.
Everytime I think of starting DatPacker I remember that I wanted to put some files in or out of the plugins, so I still use them all unpacked.
Maybe it takes loading time, but I feel I have no instability problems. Lucky me? With more than 1,2GB of plugins...

Shadow Assassin

I don't use DATPacker. Never needed it.  $%Grinno$%

Mine is now at 3gb even.  Takes about 3 minutes for the game to load and about 5 for a city tile to load, depending on how developed it is.

My plugin folder is now at 1.2GB compacted with the datpacker.  But the game still loads up and the cities still load up in an acceptable amount of time, however once they start showing signs of slowdown in loading then it's time for me to move out a lot of stuff which I don't look forward to doing since for the life of me I can't know which ones are in use and which plugins are not in use in any of my cities.  Would be great if someone could come up with a tool that would look at all the regions and cities in the game and make a list of any plugins that are or are not in use in any of the cities for easy removal.
